QUICKSMART NUMERACY

QuickSmart is a targeted numeracy intervention designed to help students improve their recall of basic number facts, mathematical fluency, problem-solving skills and confidence in mathematics. The program focuses on developing automatic recall so students can spend less time working out simple calculations and more time applying their knowledge to higher-level mathematical thinking and problem-solving.  

Year 7 or 8 students are selected for QuickSmart based on assessment data, teacher observations and classroom performance. Participating students attend three sessions per week for approximately half a lesson, allowing them to receive intensive support while remaining connected to their regular classroom learning. 

Our QuickSmart program is delivered by trained Learning Support Officers (LSOs), senior student mentors and valued community volunteers. These small-group sessions provide students with a supportive environment where they can practise key skills, build confidence and experience regular success. 

The benefits of QuickSmart extend well beyond improving basic maths skills. Students often demonstrate: 

• Improved recall of number facts 
• Increased speed and accuracy when completing mathematical tasks 
• Stronger problem-solving skills 
• Greater confidence when participating in class 
• Reduced anxiety around mathematics 
• Improved engagement and persistence when faced with challenging work 
• Increased independence in their learning 

As students begin to experience success, they often develop a more positive attitude towards mathematics and a greater belief in their own abilities. This confidence frequently carries over into the classroom, helping students become more willing to have a go, ask questions and tackle challenging tasks. 

QuickSmart is ultimately about giving students the tools they need to feel successful. By strengthening foundational skills, students are better equipped to access year-level learning, participate confidently in class and achieve their potential.
