The SCS Portrait Prize provides a professional platform to celebrate exemplary Visual arts students whilst serving as a benchmark of excellence for younger emerging talent K-12. The theme is a portrait of a person who is unique to the entrant, who is known to the entrant and who plays a significant role in their life.

Our Newman Visual Art students have been busy creating some truly amazing portraits of their loved ones and even of themselves.  Throughout the process, they've learned new drawing and painting skills, explored the stories behind the portraits that inspire them, and expressed emotions that words alone cannot capture.

We are proud to have submitted 10 outstanding entries to represent our school.  For those we haven't submitted this round, we're hoping to enter them into the Young Archie 2026 at the NSW Art Gallery next year.

Watch this space - our young artists are just getting started!

Title : The Future Astronaut

This drawing shows me, an Astronaut!

When I grow up, I want to wear a spacesuit and fly in a rocket! I want to be an astronaut because it's a super important job, and it will let me be one of the first people to discover new things far away.

I want to travel across the galaxy to see all the bright stars and big, colorful planets. I'm going to look for things we don't know about yet and help the world learn about space! I can't wait to blast off and explore!

Title : My Principal

This is my big school’s principal. His name is Mr. Darcy. Mr. Darcy is a very friendly and funny man. He always smiles and makes us laugh. I used bright and fun colours in this portrait because he makes our school a happy place.

Title: Spring Fantasy

I drew flowers and butterflies to show the beautiful season of spring. I love spring because everything looks bright and happy. I like to wear lots of flowers on my head and pretend I am in a magic land. In my fantasyland, I can dance and play with fairies and butterflies all day.

Title : My Crazy Art Teacher

My art teacher, Mrs. Ng, is amazing, talented, and super fun! She is so creative and always makes art lessons exciting. Every time I go to her class, my head fills up with so many ideas and colours that it feels like it will explode onto my paper! Colours make me so happy, and Mrs. Ng makes me love art even more.

Title : A Famous Chef

This famous chef is my dad! My dad works in a restaurant and he cooks yummy food every day. He also makes delicious meals for our family at home. He is a superstar in the kitchen, and I love him so much!

Title: My Inspiration

My dad is my inspiration. He encouraged me to learn the saxophone, and now I love playing it and performing at school. He always reminds me to practice so I can get better and become a great musician. I also love art, and it reminds me of the Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky, who turned music into beautiful paintings. I wanted to honour my dad by painting a portrait of him, inspired by Kandinsky’s idea of combining music and visual art.   Thank you, Dad!

Name : Hannah Kennedy       Year 3

Title : My Super Hero

This is my Super Hero, Max. Max is my little brother and he loves all his Marvel Super Heroes. He plays with them all day long! His favourite is the Incredible Hulk.  I remember when he was only 2 years old, he already knew how to spell H-U-L-K! That’s why I painted him in his Hulk’s pose.  Max lives in a Super Hero world — his clothes, hat, shoes, bag, water bottle, lunch box, and even his bed sheets are all Super Hero themed. He really is my Super Hero!

Title : Myself

I drew myself because I know myself better than anyone else. I love drawing and art because they let me show my feelings. I filled my portrait with lots of colours so I will never run out of colours to draw, paint, and create. I used cool colours in the background because I love calm and cool places — they make me feel comfortable and loved.

Title: Friendship

This is Jasper, my buddy. Jasper loves sports and art, and so do I! He is kind and very smart. He’s always there to help me with my school work whenever I need it. Jasper loves spending time at the beach and traveling with his family. I really enjoy hanging out with him — there’s never a dull moment when we’re together!

Good Luck St Patrick's!
