        Lesson Plan: Problem Solving Peer Conflict

Step 1: List Learning Intentions and Success Criteria

We are learning to :

• Identify different ways to solve peer conflict
• Communicate assertively and respectfully  
• Identify the consequences of solutions 
• Make compromises 

It will look like:

• Speaking clearly
• Listening to peers 
• Evaluating solutions
• Both parties happy with the solution

Step 2:  List a rationale for teaching the behaviour 

Why is it important?

Step 3:  Identify examples and non-examples of the desired behaviour 

What would the behaviour look/sound like?                      

Examples

Students actively listening to each other 

Listening to others in a non-judgemental way

Making eye contact when talking to someone or listening to someone 

Clearly saying what you are thinking or feeling or wanting

Standing up for yourself 

Showing relaxed body language 

Facing the person speaking to you 

Evaluating the consequences of possible solutions 

Making compromises with peers so both parties are happy with the outcome

What would the behaviour not look/sound like?

Non-examples

Yelling or screaming

Looking away when someone is speaking to you 

Speaking in a forceful manner 

Telling others what to do, think or feel

Not saying what you really think, feel or want just to please someone else 

Showing ‘closed’ body language i.e. crossing your arms, facing away from someone 

Making decisions on behalf of others without listening to their point of view

Getting your way without considering the wants and needs of peers
