Grade 3 & 5 MAV Maths Games Days

Last week, selected students in Grade 3 & 5 had the opportunity to participate in MAV (Mathematical Association of Victoria) Maths Games Days against students from other schools.  A Maths Games Day is an opportunity for students to develop their mathematical talents and thinking skills, work with like-minded students from a diverse range of schools and generally get excited about maths! Teams compete in a variety of mathematical activities, including problem-solving, automatic response games and probability games.

Grade 3 students ventured to Carey Grammar, where they battled head to head against students from other schools in a mixed operations card game and worked together to crack codes and solve spatial reasoning puzzles. This was this group of students' first time participating in a day like this, with one even stating, "Can I stay here forever? I love Maths!" They were wowed by the variety of Maths presented to them and the many ways in which it can be applied.

Grade 5 participated in their day at Penleigh Essendon Grammar School, where they were challenged by problem solving challenges, logic games and other team challenges requiring fact fluency, logic and reasoning. Many of the students were seasoned pros, with many of them having participated in past Maths Games Days. This experience contributed to their excellent final result, finishing fourth overall out of 21 teams.

Congratulations to all students who participated in the day.  It is always an honour to represent your school when given the chance and you all did so with such pride and enthusiasm.  We look forward to the Grade 4 & 6 MAV Maths Games Days, which will be held in upcoming weeks.

House Athletics Day 

We had an amazing day yesterday at Bill Stewart Reserve at our school Athletics Day.  Throughout Term 3 our students have been learning about all the different athletic events and our Athletics Day allowed our students to give their newfound skills a go. Our Prep – Grade 2 students undertook a range of fun activities while our Grade 3-6 students participated in a full athletics carnival.  While the day was about giving things a go and having fun, our Grade 3-6 students were competing to make our school athletics team.  We would like to thank Mr Van Der Pol for organising such a special event and a shout out goes to all the families that came down to cheer on our students.
