Canberra Excursion

Canberra Excursion – Seven Days of Learning, Discovery and Adventure
Our students enjoyed an incredible seven-day excursion to Canberra and beyond, filled with educational experiences, exciting adventures and opportunities to create lasting memories together.
Their journey began with an early 6:30am departure from Tenterfield, with our first stop in Dubbo for an unforgettable encounter with the lions at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. Students enjoyed an evening animal tour before spending the following morning exploring the zoo and discovering its fantastic range of wildlife. We then continued south to Canberra, ready for a week of learning and adventure.
During our time in the nation’s capital, students explored some of Australia’s most significant institutions and attractions. Visits to the Australian Institute of Sport, Parliament House, the Australian Electoral Commission, the National Museum of Australia, the Australian National University, Canberra University and the High Court of Australia provided valuable insights into sport, democracy, history, higher education and the Australian legal system.
A particularly special moment was our visit to the Australian War Memorial, where our School Captains, Ava and Jahmal, proudly represented our school by laying a wreath during the memorial service. This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to reflect on the service and sacrifice of Australian service personnel and pay their respects.
Our learning continued at the National Botanic Gardens and National Portrait Gallery, where students explored Australia's natural environment, art and the people who have helped shape our nation. An evening visit to Mount Stromlo Observatory also gave students the opportunity to explore the wonders of astronomy and the universe beyond our planet.
Of course, the excursion wasn't all about learning! Students enjoyed plenty of opportunities to relax, have fun and strengthen friendships, with tenpin bowling, Timezone and laser tag providing some friendly competition along the way.
One of the most memorable experiences was our day at Perisher, where students embraced the cold and enjoyed a day in the snow. Despite limited snow cover across the mountains, everyone made the most of the experience and created some wonderful memories together.
As we began our journey home, we stopped in Cowra to visit the former Prisoner of War Camp and the beautiful Japanese Garden. These visits provided valuable opportunities to learn about Australia's wartime history and our important connections with Japan. We then travelled to Wellington Caves, where students headed underground to explore the spectacular formations of Cathedral Cave and discover more about the natural history beneath our feet.
Our final night was spent in Dubbo before beginning the last leg of our journey back to Tenterfield.
Throughout the excursion, students demonstrated enthusiasm, curiosity and a willingness to embrace new experiences. From exploring Australia's history and democracy to encountering wildlife, discovering new learning opportunities and enjoying adventures together, the trip offered something for everyone.
A big thank you to our staff for their organisation, care and dedication in making this excursion such a success, and to our students for their positive attitudes and wonderful participation throughout the week. Also a special mention to Rotary Tenterfield and Mrs Patricia Williams who have made a significant financial contribution to THS so we can offer this to our students at a heavily discounted cost.
It was a fantastic opportunity for learning beyond the classroom, building friendships and creating memories that will last a lifetime!
