MUSIC PERFORMANCE 

Units 1 - 4

 

Course Description:   

VCE Music Performance is designed to develop students' performance and musicianship skills. 

 

In Units 1 and 2, students will rehearse and perform both solo and group works on their chosen instrument, showcasing their progress in semester recitals. They will refine their technique through regular instrumental lessons, explore various performance practices, and engage in improvisation to enhance their musical expression.

 

Students will also build a strong foundation in music theory, aural training, and analysis to deepen their understanding and appreciation of music.

 

In Units 3 and 4, students continue to expand on these skills, with the added option to specialise in either the Repertoire or Contemporary stream, allowing them to tailor their studies to their musical interests and goals.

 

Assessment:                     

Consists of the following: 

  • Performances - Ensemble and Solo 
  • Folios of Production Processes and Stagecraft which can include multimedia presentations. 
  • Exams - Written and Performance 
  • Performance analyses  

 

Pathway:                             

Musician (singer or instrumentalist), Arranger, Composer, Conductor, Entertainer, Music Director, Music Programmer/ Sampler, Music Software Designer, Music Teacher, Music Therapist, Orchestra Musician, Sound Engineer, Advertising/jingle writer.

 

Prerequisites:

We highly recommend completing Year 9 and/or Year 10 Music Performance before choosing this subject, as you will need a foundational understanding of music concepts.

 

Special Requirements:         

All students are expected to undertake private tuition on their chosen instrument or voice through the College Instrumental Music program or a private teacher/music school. 

 

Students will be required to perform regularly. In addition to classroom learning, you'll have opportunities to showcase your talent at college functions (for example, Open Night, Winter and Spring Concerts) and participate in a school ensemble or program (for example, Choir, Stage Band or Musical Production).

 

Additional Financial Contribution:

Unit 1&2 - $50

Unit 3&4 - $50

Purchase and maintenance/service of equipment, including instruments. Engaging external tutors as required.

THEATRE STUDIES 

Units 1 & 2

 

Course Description:   

This study enables students to: 

  • acquire knowledge of theatre, including its styles, traditions, purposes and audiences 
  • interpret playscripts through engagement in the production process 

  • creatively and imaginatively explore and experiment with theatrical possibilities 

  • develop and apply stagecraft knowledge and skills to interpret playscripts 

  • develop an understanding of themselves as theatre makers and practitioners 

  • develop an appreciation of theatre and its significance as an art form 

  • apply skills of theatrical analysis and evaluation to their own production work and that of others 

  • participate in the theatrical life of their community. 

The study is made up of two units: 

  • Unit 1: Pre-modern Theatre 
  • Unit 2: Modern Theatre 

 

Assessment:                     

Consists of the following: 

  • Performances - Ensemble and Solo 
  • Folios of Production Processes and Stagecraft which can include multimedia presentations. 
  • Exams - Written and Performance 
  • Performance analyses 

 

Prerequisites:

Students are to demonstrate performance skills and critically analyse production elements and performances. 

 

Special Requirements:         

Students are required to attend performances outside school hours. This will be an extra cost to subject fees, dependent on the show, location and timing. 

 

Additional Financial Contribution:

Unit 1&2 - No financial contribution
