Prep/1 Classroom News
Mathematics
Prep and Grade 1 students have been developing their understanding of number and measurement through engaging, hands-on learning experiences. Students explored the concepts of more and less by comparing numbers and collections, becoming "human number lines" and using real objects to explain their mathematical thinking. They also investigated length, comparing and ordering objects from shortest to longest while using mathematical language such as longer, shorter and about the same. These practical activities encouraged students to reason, communicate their thinking and build confidence with maths concepts.
Literacy
In Literacy, students have continued to strengthen their reading, writing and phonics skills. Prep students have been learning new sounds and tricky words through their InitiaLit program while practising sentence writing with correct capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. They have enjoyed writing about their weekends and holidays, as well as completing simple dictated sentences. Grade 1 students have been developing their recount writing by sequencing events with time connectives such as first, then and finally, while also extending their writing through paragraphs, stronger sentence structure and improved punctuation. Across both year levels, students have shown great enthusiasm and pride in sharing their writing with their classmates.
Humanities
This fortnight, students have been exploring their place in the world through the topic 'Me on the Map'. They created their own booklets, learning about where they belong within their local community, state, country, continent and the wider world. Students enjoyed making connections between themselves and the places they call home while developing their understanding of maps and location.
Physical Education
In Physical Education, students have been building their fundamental movement skills through a variety of fun and inclusive games. They have practised throwing, catching, striking and teamwork during modified tee-ball and rounders activities. It has been fantastic to see students demonstrating resilience, cooperation and encouragement as they participate and improve their skills each week.
Team 2/3
Big changes in the 2/3 area this year with students being shuffled around to different maths and literacy teachers and groups. This change has been a positive thing. All students have begun well and have settled into their routine with ease!
Mrs. T left us at the end of last term to return to her usual school as a qualified teacher! What better way to finish off last term than having our class reward- the PJ Disco. Our little groovers went not stop for an hour dancing to their favourite songs and working up a sweat! Our students will miss Mrs. T's fun lessons, help and caring nature in the classroom. In maths, we have began working on division. We have been practising sharing objects and putting objects into equal groups to find the answer. We have focused on ensuring the largest number is at the beginning of each number sentence. We continue to practice our 2 x tables aka doubles. We are also making sure we understand that division and multiplication work together- Multiplication puts the equal groups together and division takes them apart!
In literacy, we are working on Information Reports. So far we have gathered information on an animal and have been putting it into categories eg diet, appearance. This group has been working very well together first thing each morning. We have continued on from last term's focus on verbs and begun investigating compound words as well.
In other areas, we have been learning ball skills for netball and footy, painting with water colours, looking at changes that have occurred through time and begun regular typing practice too.
Inter-School AFL
This fortnight, a group of our students proudly represented Lockwood Primary School, Inglewood Primary School and St Mary's Primary School at the inter-school AFL competition. The team displayed fantastic sportsmanship, teamwork and determination throughout the day, finishing with two wins and two losses. Most importantly, students worked together by sharing the football, encouraging one another and giving their best effort in every game. It was a fun day filled with great teamwork, skill development and school pride.
4/5/6 News
The 4/5/6 classroom has had an amazing start to Term 3! All of the students have been demonstrating their growth mindsets, and have launched into the second half of the year with enthusiasm and energy. Some of our students have also started working with Mrs Lawson in maths and literacy, and have demonstrated really positive approaches to working with these new groups.
In Literacy we have started reading our new class novel, Bindi by Kirli Saunders. This book is interesting because it is written in ‘free verse’, meaning that the entire book has been written as poetry! The students have been really enjoying it, and we have been able to have some amazing discussions about poetry using all of our new vocabulary, such as ‘prosody’ ‘stanza’ and ‘enjambment’.
In Maths the students are expanding their knowledge of perimeter and area, and are becoming really confident when using these concepts. They are also being challenged to apply everything they know to some real-life scenarios!
In Humanities this term our focus is Geography, and the students have been practicing noticing all of the natural resources that are available to us in the wider world. In Technology the students are working hard to become more confident and skilled at using computers, sharing the computer shortcuts that they find most useful and beginning to learn touch typing. It’s very exciting to see them at the beginning of their journey towards computer mastery!
