Rockin' at the Parents Battle of the Bands

The Prince Bandroom in St Kilda was rocking last night for the Parents Battle of the Bands – Southside Heat! With over 120 PMPS parents in the crowd, you all helped raise the roof and bring home the ticket sales award for our school! And the winning didn't stop there...

The Portals win again!

Our very own Port Melbourne Primary School parents' band, The Portals, lit up the stage, delivering another unforgettable performance. This year the theme was LOVE and the judges certainly loved their performance, awarding them first place again! This is the fourth year in a row that The Portals have brought home the trophy!

The band were ecstatic with their win:

"Thanks to our epic PMPS parents crowd, we are now the first band ever to win 4 battles in a row! We’ve been so lucky to pick up another 3 new talented band members this year and still take out the win.

Also worth sharing that our drummer Danny Smith tore his ACL only a week before the battle and postponed his surgery so he could play in the battle! Now THAT is what PMPS is all about right there!"

 – Steve Plarre, singer in The Portals

If you missed the gig, their setlist included classics like:

  • Let’s Go Crazy by Prince
  • I Was Made for Lovin' You by KISS
  • Shot Through the Heart by Bon Jovi
  • Believe by Cher (with an incredible crowd backing vocals)
  • Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler
  • Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus

Other primary schools that rocked the night included Albert Park, Elwood and St Kilda, who came second with a beautifully artistic set. Another standout performance came from Elsternwick, who delivered a crowd favourite with their take on Playlunch’s hit song Keith – a bogan-funk banger that stormed the airwaves last year and placed fourth in Triple J’s Hottest 100!

A huge thank you again to everyone who attended. Proceeds from the ticket sales go directly to supporting our school music program, and we can’t wait to see what Miss Maria will do with the funds!

Port Melbourne’s parent band have so far raised over $15,000 for our fabulous school.

Upcoming gigs

For those who missed it, don't worry – there’s more to come! The Parents Battle of the Bands Northside vs Southside Finals is in the works – local schools and ones from across the river will compete for the title of Melbourne’s Best Parent Band. Check them out at The Corner Hotel in Richmond on 10 September!
