Last Friday we gathered as a school community at the flagpole to commemorate ANZAC Day.  The 25th April is a day of commemoration for Australians and New Zealanders, where we remember victims of war and we recognise the role of our armed forces. This date marks the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.  The acronym ‘ANZAC’ stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.

STATE MEMBER VISIT

On Tuesday 21st April, our Year 6 students had the opportunity to meet with Dylan Wight, the State Member for Tarneit. He spoke to the students about his role in supporting the local community and his work at the state government level. The students were highly engaged and appreciated the opportunity to ask questions, gaining valuable insight into how the government operates and how decisions are made that impact our community.

BUILDING UPDATE

The remaining buildings of our Stage 4A project will be completed over Term 2. This includes a toilet block and an additional double modular classroom which will be located on the southern end of our existing classrooms which were delivered over January.  These classrooms will allow the school to cater for enrolment demand in the coming years.

COMPLETION OF BOUNDARY FENCING

We are delighted that we have been able to complete the final section of boundary fencing along the Embleton Ave side of the school. I thank parents for their patience as this has been on our wishlist for some time.

Over the Holidays two staff members celebrated their weddings.  The holidays began with the wedding of Vee and her husband Ross, who celebrated the day with friends and family.  We also congratulate Cooper and his wife Hannah on their recent nuptials and we wish them all the best for the years ahead.

ANZAC DAY DAWN SERVICE

Thousands of people gathered before sunrise in Werribee on Anzac Day to pay tribute to Australians who lost their lives in war. The ceremony at the cenotaph included the laying of wreaths and silent tributes from people of all ages, recognising the service and sacrifice of the nation’s veterans. The annual event, organised by the Werribee RSL, saw participation from veterans, volunteers, local organisations and local schools. Cooper & Boston Matulich, along with their family, represented our school by laying a wreath as part of the ceremony.  We thank the Matulich family for representing St John the Apostle at the ceremony.

Each term our students participate in some online safety sessions, run by our partners from Inform and Empower. The focus of our Term 2 sessions is on healthy digital habits. Students will be exploring how screen time can make us feel, the importance of sleep, and why we need to balance screen time with green time.

CHILD SAFETY - IMPACTS OF SCREEN TIME

As part of our ongoing commitment to child safety, we have an Online Safety Parent Hub. The Parent Hub provides a wealth of online safety resources such as; digital parenting guides, app reviews and articles.  These are developed by a team of leading digital safety and wellbeing experts. Plus, families have access to free parental control tools to help keep children safe while using their personal devices.  Content on the hub is constantly updated and added to, so parents should try to get into the habit of visiting this regularly especially as new online social media platforms and games are released.

Today we draw your attention to a short but informative article by online safety expert Michelle Manowski.  The article looks at the impact Screen Time is having on your child’s sleep (and their smarts).  Michelle Manowski explores how to identify the warning signs and the negatives of screen use on sleep.  It also includes the top 5 ways to reclaim sleep and restore focus.

ASSEMBLY LIVE STREAMS

Each Friday the students gather for a whole school assembly in the Hall.  This event is usually streamed to our Vimeo channel.  Families can view the assembly by clicking on the link which is sent through via our nForma Parent App.
