Why Good Governance Matters

Last term we shared a glimpse of the quiet work of the Good Shepherd School Board and the role it plays in guiding the future of our school. It also raises an important question: why does governance matter in education?

Every day at Good Shepherd, learning happens in many ways, in classrooms, on the playground, through friendships, through curiosity, creativity and discovery. Parents see it in the excitement shared at the dinner table, the stories from the playground, or the pride after mastering something new. Education is not only about preparing students for the future; it is about shaping the experiences that help them grow each day.

While teachers and staff lead the daily life of the school, the School Board helps ensure the long-term direction of Good Shepherd continues to reflect the values that shape our community - Love, Optimism and Creativity.

Through thoughtful planning, responsible financial stewardship and careful decision-making, the Board helps ensure the school remains strong, sustainable and aligned with its vision of nurturing the whole child.

As our current School Strategic Plan approached its conclusion in 2025, we took the opportunity to listen carefully to our community as we began thinking about the next chapter for Good Shepherd.

To help shape the Strategic Plan for the next five years, we undertook a community-wide survey as a “pulse check” for the school. The survey provided valuable insight into how families, students and staff are currently experiencing life at Good Shepherd, while also highlighting opportunities for us to strengthen and improve the life of our school.

Over the following year, the School Board carefully reviewed and analysed this feedback, alongside broader reflection on what makes Good Shepherd unique within our area. This work was undertaken by the Board and a dedicated sub-committee, working closely with the school’s leadership team. Together, this partnership has helped shape a new Strategic Plan that will guide Good Shepherd through to 2030, ensuring the school continues to grow and flourish for the benefit of current and future students.

Good governance reflects the partnership that defines Good Shepherd. Education is strongest when families, staff and the wider community work together to support children as they learn, grow and discover their place in the world.

“Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” - John Dewey

Together, we continue helping our students grow for LIFE.
