OGA Career Connections Event

On Tuesday 27 May, Year 12 students at Girton Grammar School had the fantastic opportunity to attend a Career Connections event during VCE Motivate, organised by the Old Girtonians Association. This engaging event featured three former students who returned to share their unique professional and personal journeys since graduating, providing current students with invaluable insights and inspiration.

Daniel Atkinson (Millward, 2013) developed a passion for the sciences, much of which he attributes to the inspiring teaching of educators like Dr O’Reilly. Reflecting on his time at Girton, he recalls the unforgettable adventures during the World Challenge trip to Borneo with Mrs Hogan and Mr Crickmore in Year 11. After graduation, Daniel pursued a Bachelor of Applied Science and later a masters degree in Physiotherapy at La Trobe University in Bendigo. His career path has taken him to remarkable locations, including Niseko in Japan, before returning home to Bendigo Health after a rewarding period in Darwin. While his initial dream was to work in the ski industry, an injury led him to discover his true calling in physiotherapy. Daniel emphasised the highs and lows of his work, finding true fulfillment in helping individuals through their toughest moments. He also shared personal milestones, including becoming a proud homeowner and the recent arrival of his daughter.

Ellen Butters (Frew, 2009) shared her journey from a passion for numbers to a successful career in risk consulting and internal audit management. After earning a Bachelor of Accounting from La Trobe University, she enhanced her qualifications with Chartered Accountants Australia New Zealand. Ellen began her career at Ernst & Young in Melbourne before returning to Bendigo, where she has held significant positions with the City of Greater Bendigo and AFS & Associates. In her current role, she collaborates with dedicated professionals nationwide, facing new challenges every day. Beyond her career achievements, Ellen has celebrated major life events such as homeownership and motherhood, as well as an upcoming addition to her family. She emphasised the importance of flexibility in career choices, encouraging students to remain open-minded and to discover their true passions over time.

David Symons (Jenkin, 2010) reflected on his experiences as a school leader and his path to becoming a lawyer. After earning a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Commerce from Deakin University, he completed a postgraduate Diploma of Legal Practice and was admitted as a lawyer in 2016. David has spent nearly a decade at HQ Law in Bendigo, specialising in wills and estates, where he finds great purpose in supporting clients during vulnerable times. Sharing his personal growth through recent travel in Europe and community involvement, he underscored the importance of giving back. David noted that his academic journey was not without challenges, but he is grateful for the tough conversations with teachers that have equipped him for success in life and career.

The OGA Career Connections event provided a rich and inspiring experience for Year 12 students, offering encouragement and guidance as they prepare to embark on their own journeys. The speakers' narratives showcased the significance of embracing challenges, chasing passions, and enjoying the journey of self-discovery and growth. This event was a reminder of the endless opportunities that lie ahead for students as they forge their paths toward fulfilling futures.
