Reminders:
Hats
With the warmer weather returning, it’s time for hats to come back to school!
Grade 5 and 6 students are reminded to bring their school hat back to school if they haven’t already and to make sure they are wearing it during outdoor activities and break times.
Please encourage students to get into the habit of having their hat ready each day so they can enjoy their time outside. Hats on, play on! ☀️
CBL Market Day
This Wednesday, September 16th, is our 5/6 CBL Market Day. We are so excited to see our students hard work displayed and put on show for the rest of our students to enjoy. Congratulations to our 5/6s on their teamwork and entrepreneurial skills!
Literacy
Reading
This week, students will be concluding their analysis and learning of Wonder. Students will complete an Opinion and Evidence Reflection as their summative assessment, providing an opportunity to showcase their understanding of the novel, share their perspectives and support their ideas with relevant evidence from the text.
To finish our Term 3 study of Wonder, students will enjoy a movie session across Thursday and Friday, watching the film adaptation of the novel. This will be a wonderful way to celebrate the completion of our Literature Circles and make connections between the novel and its film adaptation.
Writing
In Writing, students will continue exploring common mistakes that can occur in narrative and creative writing, and investigating strategies authors can use to elevate their work. Students will focus on making purposeful choices with vocabulary, sentence structure and description to capture their audience’s attention and create more engaging writing.
Phormes
This week in Phormes, students will continue exploring Latin numbers and how they appear within familiar and unfamiliar words. Students will use their understanding of these elements to strengthen their spelling, expand their vocabulary and make connections between a word’s structure and meaning. This week, our focus will be on bi/du meaning 2, tri meaning 3, quad/quart meaning 4 and quint meaning 5.
What you can do at home:
- Ask your child to share their overall opinion of Wonder. Encourage them to explain their thinking using a specific character, event or piece of evidence from the novel.
- Discuss some of the common writing mistakes they have been exploring and the strategies they can use to elevate a simple sentence or story idea to make it more engaging.
- Look for words containing the Latin number elements une, bi/du, tri, quad and quart. Discuss what the number element means and how it contributes to the meaning of the whole word.
Maths
For the remainder of Term 3, Grade 5 and 6 students will put their maths skills to the test as we revisit key concepts from Terms 1, 2 and 3! Through a variety of revision activities and challenges, students will have the opportunity to show what they know, strengthen their problem-solving skills and build confidence across the different areas of mathematics we have explored this year. This will help to provide consolidation of key concepts as we head into Term 4.
What you can do at home:
- Revisit key concepts from earlier in the year through everyday opportunities, such as working with fractions and decimals, measuring around the home, calculating money or practising mental computation strategies.
CBL
Big Idea: How can we use our power to create positive change globally?

- How can we use resources responsibly?
How can people use their ideas, skills and resources to improve the world around them?
Challenge: Create a small business, social enterprise or circular economy initiative that generates a profit for good.
Wellbeing
This week in Wellbeing, students will complete Cyber Safety Project – Lesson 12: Ready for Anything. Students will explore a range of online social situations and consider how they can use their emotional strength to manage their reactions, make thoughtful choices and respond positively when navigating challenges online.
Our Grade 6 students will also continue their ongoing high school Question and Answer sessions within their classrooms. These discussions provide students with opportunities to ask questions, share any thoughts or uncertainties they may have, and continue building confidence as they prepare for their transition to secondary school.
What you can do at home:
- Discuss how your child might respond when faced with a challenging or uncomfortable social situation online.
- Explore strategies students can use to manage their emotions, pause before reacting and make positive choices.
- For Grade 6 families, continue conversations about the transition to high school, encouraging your child to share any questions, thoughts or concerns they may have.
