Sun Protection and Hats

In line with our Sun Protection Policy, from 1 September to 30 April all students must wear a wide-brimmed hat that shades the face, neck and ears during all outdoor activities. 

Please dig out your child’s hat, clearly write their name inside it and ensure it is packed in their school bag for tomorrow. Replacement hats are available from the school office for $10. Baseball caps and visors do not provide adequate protection.

We also recommend that students apply SPF50 or SPF50+ broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen at home each morning and carry some in their bag for reapplication. Sunscreen is also available in all classrooms.

Teachers will direct students to wear their hats from tomorrow. From Monday 7 September, students without a suitable hat will need to play under cover in the quadrangle during break times.

Premiers' Reading Challenge

The 2026 Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is nearly finished, with the Challenge closing on Thursday 3 September.

There are just over two weeks left, so now is the time to finish those last few books and, importantly, make sure all books you have read are logged online.

To successfully complete the Challenge and receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier, students need to have:

• Foundation to Year 2: Read or experienced 30 books, including at least 20 books from the Challenge book list.

• Years 3 to 6: Read 15 books, including at least 10 books from the Challenge book list.

   

Students received their Premiers’ Reading Challenge username and password back in March. If your child has misplaced these details and needs them replaced, please contact our Challenge Coordinator, Prue Robbins, at prudence.robbins@education.vic.gov.au.

We know many SKiPPS students have been doing some fantastic reading this year, so please take a few minutes to check your online record and make sure everything is up to date before 3 September.

SKiPPS Walkathon - Wednesday 9 September

Our 2026 Walkathon is coming up on Wednesday 9 September from 2.00pm to 3.00pm, with funds raised supporting a new landscaped, tiered seating area and outdoor platform beside our basketball courts. 

We are grateful to Rachael O’Connor from Marshall White, who will donate 50 cents for every lap completed, and to Woolworths Metro St Kilda for supporting the event. 

Please help us make this our biggest Walkathon yet by donating to your child’s class through MyCause and sharing the page with family and friends.

A Special Day of the Arts at SKiPPS

Tuesday 15th September will be a very special day for the Arts at SKiPPS, with students across the school taking part in two wonderful experiences designed to bring the Visual and Performing Arts curriculum to life.

Our Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 students will walk to the National Theatre in St Kilda to see a live performance of Where is the Green Sheep?, based on the much-loved book by Mem Fox and Judy Horacek. Through puppetry, music and storytelling, students will have the opportunity to experience a familiar story in a completely new way.

Back at school, our Year 3 to 6 students will spend the morning with renowned Australian musician and educator Mal Webb. Students will enjoy a whole group concert followed by workshops exploring singing, rhythm, body percussion, vocal sounds, and creative music making.

Both of these experiences have been fully funded by a generous donation from one of our school families, meaning there is no cost to families for students to participate.

We are incredibly grateful for this support and for the opportunities it allows us to provide our students. Over the past three years, this donation has enabled us to offer some truly unique Arts experiences, including visits to Arts Centre Melbourne and THE LUME, as well as this year’s live theatre performance and music workshops.

Experiences like these give our students opportunities to encounter professional artists, performers and Arts spaces beyond the classroom and help build a lifelong appreciation of the Arts.

A huge thank you to our generous donor for continuing to support the Arts at SKiPPS and helping us create these memorable experiences for our students. We feel very fortunate to be able to offer them

St Kilda Food Rescue -Volunteers Needed

Many SKiPPS families may already be familiar with St Kilda Food Rescue, a local volunteer-run food rescue and distribution program that takes place every Thursday afternoon at the St Kilda Bowls Club.

Started by SKiPPS parent Laura Marini, the group rescues surplus food from local businesses and redistributes it back into the community, helping to reduce food waste emissions and ensures good food is used.

The group is now looking for more local volunteers, including SKiPPS families, to help keep this valuable community initiative running. There are a few different ways to get involved:

1. Food collection drivers– collect surplus food from local businesses between approximately 1:00 pm and 2:45 pm on Thursdays and deliver it to the St Kilda Bowls Club by 3:00 pm. This is currently one of the group’s biggest needs.

    

2. Setup, distribution and pack-down helpers – help put out the food, assist with distribution and pack up afterwards (approximately 2:30pm–4:00 pm on Thursdays). This can be a great option for parents who are able to come to school earlier than pickup time and for children who are old enough to meet parents at the Bowls Club.

There is no weekly commitment required. Volunteers join the WhatsApp group and simply put their hand up when they are available- whether that is once a week, once a month, or whenever suits. Volunteers are also welcome to take home some of the rescued food, helping us make sure as much surplus as possible is used rather than wasted.

It is a wonderful opportunity to help reduce emissions from food waste, support our local community and connect with other local volunteers. If you would like to find out more or join the volunteer group, please email Laura at marinilaura73@gmail.com
