Gardening Program Update

What is growing in our garden

Our garden is bursting with winter produce! We had a bumper crop of broccoli, heaps of snow peas and herbs. Students always eagerly awaiting their share of steamed broccoli.

Tea party

Last two weeks we held tea parties during our gardening sessions. All classes enjoyed freshly baked scones served with our school made fig jam and cream. Students also had warm lemon verbena tea, picked from our garden and dried during summer and autumn. Students had to work hard to whip the cream by shaking it in jars.  The recipe is provided below.

CWA Show Scone Recipe

Ingredient

3 cups Self Raising Flour (450gms)

1tsp salt

1/2 cup cream (135gms)

1 cup milk (257gms)

Method

  • Sift dry ingredients. Cut in cream and milk with a knife.
  • Work quickly into a dough on a floured bench.
  • Flatten into about a 1.5cm high rectangle on a lightly floured or greased scone tray.
  • Cut into squares with knife or pizza cutter and place on top shelf of very hot oven (220-230C) for approximately 10-12 minutes.

Seed planting

As the winter is drawing to a close, we have started planning for summer. Students have already planted tomato, sunflower, cucumber, bean and capsicum seeds. The pots will then go into our green house as it's still too cold.
