🌱 Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden – Term 3
Term 3 has been another wonderful term in our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program, with a focus on introducing new flavours, using more vegetables and building confidence and independence in the kitchen.
For our Year 3 students, we continued to develop their knife skills by introducing more knife work into our lessons. Students have been learning to work safely with a growing range of ingredients, building practical skills that will stay with them well beyond their time in the Kitchen Garden.
Our Term 3 menus gave students plenty of opportunities to explore new tastes and ingredients. We began with Okonomiyaki, Japanese-style savoury pancakes, making great use of the vegetables from our fridge and garden while introducing students to new flavours and cooking techniques.
We then fired up our wood-fired pizza oven for Pumpkin, Rosemary and Rocket Pizzas. Pumpkin on pizza wasn't everyone's first choice, but it turned out to be a delicious surprise! Fresh herbs from our garden helped bring all the flavours together.
We then went back to basics, making fresh pasta completely by hand! Students learnt to make Tagliatelle without a pasta machine. Our simple dough used one egg for every 100 grams of flour and a pinch of salt — that's it! Using rolling pins, students rolled out silky-smooth sheets of pasta before using their knife skills to cut long ribbons. The tagliatelle was then dressed in a delicious, veggie-packed sauce. Delizioso!
We finished the term with a hearty Minestrone Soup with Warm Bread Rolls, using plenty of favourite winter vegetables and staples to create a delicious and warming meal. Students also enjoyed making fresh bread rolls to serve alongside their soup.
A very big thank you, as always, goes to our amazing team of Kitchen Garden helpers. Your time, knowledge and guidance make such a difference to our students. You continue to empower them with practical skills, confidence and independence — amazing life skills they will carry with them forever.
We are truly grateful for your ongoing support! 💚
