Year 5/6 News

It has been another busy and rewarding term in Year 5/6! 

We could go into detail about all of the work taking place in our class, but why not let our wonderful Year 5/6 students take care of it instead! Please read on as they unpack some of our senior school learning thus far this term. 

Integrated - The Arts

Production practice by Chiara in Year 6

"Since the start of Term Three, the Year 5/6s have been working really hard on practising for the production. Some of the things we have been working on include projecting our voices and using different highs and lows for different parts of what we are saying. This makes everything a bit more emotional and strong! 

We have been working since the start of Term Three in remembering our lines. We are now practicing without any scripts at all which is a huge improvement! Now the scripts are gone we can focus a bit more on our actions and how we move on stage. I'm not going to say anymore because it will spoil the production. You will just need to attend on the night!" 

Writing

Persuasive Writing by Christelle in Year 5

"In writing at the moment we have been doing Persuasive Writing. This writing is like an argument where you are trying to convince the reader to agree with your opinion! 

One of our techniques is you need to find three key facts for your paragraphs, one idea per paragraph. You need a big detail and then some supporting details to back your argument up! 

One of the big topics we have been practicing in class is Do Video Games Teach You Real Life Skills?

I chose to disagree! When I researched this topic I found that Video Games have a strong link to gambling and can lead to poor health in children which I wrote all about. 

In my writing I am trying to convince the reader my opinion is best, and that Video Games don't teach real life skills!" 

Reading 

Literature Circles by Lucas in Year 6 

"This term we have been continuing with Literature Circles! 

This is where in a group we all read the same novel together. We all get different roles each week, and then we sit down with our teacher and share the work we have completed. Please see the roles below! 

I really enjoy swapping the roles and talking in our groups. Talking is great because you express how you feel about the story. Everyone in the group might have different ideas and opinions and its great to share!

My group are reading Rabbit, Soldier, Angel, Thief by Katrina Nannestad. I'm enjoying the book a lot! The main character in the book expresses his feelings really well so it's easy to keep reading. Theres also always something exciting happening! 

The character explains things that are happening to him so well, it's like you are there with him. We only have two weeks of reading left so we will finish soon!"

Maths

Angles by Joseph in Year 5

"In Maths this term we have been looking at Angles! One of the key skills we have been learning is how to use a protractor. It's a tool that can measure an angle! 

We have been identifying the exact measurement of different angles. We can do this on worksheets but also find examples in the classroom like on our whiteboard. 

Did you know that the angles inside a triangle add up to 180 degrees? On a triangle there are also interior angles and exterior angles. This means angles both on the inside and outside of the shape. 

Angles are really important to know in real life, and so is measurement. If you are building something like a house, you need to be exact, if you just guess your measurements, building won't go very well!"

This is just a little snapshot of all that is taking place in 5/6 at the moment, we are extremely proud of our Senior School students and all their efforts.
