Smile Squad oral health packs

All children deserve a healthy smile, and the Smile Squad free school dental program is working hard to help make this happen.

Your child(ren) will soon receive a free oral health pack to bring home. The pack contains a toothbrush, full-sized toothpaste, and an oral health brochure. Please take a moment to read the brochure—it is full of useful tips to help your family eat well, drink well, and clean well for life.

Standard strength toothpaste

Smile Squad provides standard-strength fluoride toothpaste, which is generally recommended for ages six and over unless advised otherwise by a dental or trained health professional.

If your child is under six, please speak with a dental or trained health professional to determine whether this toothpaste is suitable. Alternatively, you may choose to put the toothpaste aside until they turn six or give it to another family member.

Do I need to attend my child’s appointment?

No, you do not need to attend your child’s appointment. You are welcome to attend if you wish, and you can choose to take your child to a community dental clinic if that suits your family better.

Donations Required Please

KFPS is asking for any spare wool, ribbon, thread and felt fabric from parents, carers and families. This term we are looking at textile art in the art room, and we especially need lots of wool if anyone has any.

Hats From 1st September to 30 April

All students and staff must wear a sun protective school hat that shades the face, neck and ears for all outdoor activities. School hats may also be worn for all outdoor activities outside of the September to April time period, by parent or student choice.

During SunSmart months, those who are not wearing wide brim GREEN hats will be asked to use available areas of shade when outdoors or a suitable area protected from the sun.

Please see our Sun Protection Policy on the KFPS website for more information.

On 20 August, CAS and TS VELCI providers came together for a practical and engaging Community of Practice. A highlight of the day was hearing from Lachie and Carl as they shared Lachie's journey. Through an honest and engaging conversation, Lachie reflected on his experiences, the support he received through the program, and the opportunities that helped him move forward.

Their story was a powerful reminder of the impact that strengths-based support can have. More importantly, it reinforced the value of seeing young people for their potential and walking alongside them as they navigate their pathways.

The session resonated strongly with everyone, leaving many inspired and reaffirming the importance of relationship-based, strengths-focused practice.

Thank you to Lachie and Carl for generously sharing their experiences with the VELCI community.

Building Resilience and Respect Through RRRR

Our school’s RRRR (Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships) program supports students to develop the skills and knowledge they need to build positive relationships, manage emotions and make safe, respectful choices.

Through age-appropriate lessons and activities, students learn practical strategies for recognising and managing emotions, developing resilience, communicating effectively, resolving conflict, showing empathy and respecting themselves and others. The program also helps students understand personal strengths, seek help when needed, and build healthy and respectful relationships.

RRRR is an important part of supporting our students’ social and emotional wellbeing and helping them feel confident, connected and ready to learn.

Growing Our Minds: The Power of a Positive Mindset

At our school, we believe that everyone can learn, grow and improve. Sometimes learning can feel tricky, and it is normal to make mistakes or feel frustrated when something does not go the way we hoped. This is where having a growth mindset can make a big difference.

A growth mindset means believing that our abilities are not fixed. Instead, we can develop our skills through effort, practice, patience and learning from our mistakes. Rather than saying, “I can’t do this,” we can try saying, “I can’t do this yet.” That small word, yet, reminds us that learning is a journey.

The importance of being positive

Being positive does not mean that we have to be happy all the time. Everyone has difficult days and experiences moments when things feel challenging. Being positive means choosing to look for possibilities and believing that we can take steps forward.

When we use positive language, we encourage ourselves and others. For example:

  • “This is too hard” can become “This is challenging, but I can keep trying.”
  • “I’m not good at this” can become “I’m still learning how to do this.”
  • “I made a mistake” can become “I can learn from my mistake.”
  • “I’ll never get it” can become “I’ll keep practising and ask for help if I need it.”

Our words can influence the way we think, feel and approach challenges. Positive self-talk can help us become more confident, resilient and willing to have another go.

Mistakes help our brains grow

Mistakes are not something we should be afraid of. They are an important part of learning. When we make a mistake, we have an opportunity to think about what happened, try a different strategy and improve.

This week, we encourage all students to celebrate effort, persistence and progress, rather than focusing only on getting the right answer. Remember, learning is not about being perfect. It is about having a go, learning from challenges and becoming a little better each day.

So, when something feels difficult, remember:

“I can do hard things. I can learn from my mistakes. I can keep trying. I may not be able to do it yet, but I can grow!”

Together, let’s create a school community where positive thinking, kindness, perseverance and a love of learning help everyone to thrive.

Healthy coping strategies help children manage big emotions, reduce stress, and build emotional resilience. Coping isn’t something that we’re born knowing what to do; it’s something we learn how to do with practice. It’s never too early or too late to start developing healthy coping skills. Coping strategies can be used at any time and using them regularly can help prevent stress from happening in the first place.

Try lots of different coping skills. Every coping strategy isn’t going to work for every person, and what works today, might not work tomorrow. That is why it is important to practice many different coping strategies to find the one that best works at any given time.

Make practicing coping skills fun!
