The Importance of Routines

As a school, KPS has been working at establishing new routines, as well as solidifying old ones. These routines that we have been working on include how students line up and walk into the classroom, how they transition between activities, as well as how they use educational items such as the whiteboards.

There is an importance that comes along with these routines, as it creates reliability and consistency for our students. When students operate in a predictable environment, it can alleviate stress and worry, as they know what to except and what parts of the day may look like.

With these routines being put into play within the school environment, I want to take the opportunity discuss the importance of morning routines at home, before school. Having a calm, consistent and predictable morning routine can really set your children up for a successful day.

Routines might look different for each family, however the benefit – for the whole family – is the same, this benefit being your children coming to school ready to learn, emotionally regulated and feeling confident for the day ahead. The benefits extend to stress reduction, an increase in time management skills and can also create an increase in quality time with your children.

To assist with the morning routine, completing some things the night before can help avoid last minute rushes and stress. Getting out their uniform and packing their bags the night before, aides the calmness of the morning to set them up for the day.

Here is an example of what a morning routine might look like:

7:30am – Wake up

7:40am – Breakfast

8:00am – Wash face, brush teeth, get dressed

8:20am – Make lunch and pack bag

8:30am – Leave for school
