Gala Day reports from 5/6 students

Basketball Boys - By Max S, Liam S and Hansen

Our basketball teams attended the Summer Gala Day on Friday, 20th March. This year, the basketball boys from Year 5/6 competed in 5 games between other schools. The A team had won 3 out of the 5 games they played, sadly we did not beat 2 other teams. The B team won half of their games, which is 2 out of 4 games they played. Everyone showed growth in their skills and teamwork from the first to the last game.

Sacred Heart ended up winning the Gala Day 2026 for the boys, they also ended up winning in the girls’ division. The A team came 3rd in our pool, which means we came 3rd for the games we played, but we got 5th overall. The B team also got 3rd in their pool and got 6th overall. We had a great day and thank our teachers and parent helpers for supporting us!

Rounders Girls - By April, Madeline and Sara

On Friday, 20th March, we played Rounders at the Summer Gala Day. Rounders was fun and exciting! It made us build connections with each other and work as a team successfully. Although some results were disappointing, everyone still had an amazing time.

Both Oakleigh Girls teams played against Huntingdale, Aimsleigh and Sacred Heart. Girls Team 1 played Aimsleigh, Clarinda, Huntingdale and then finally Sacred Heart in the Semi Final. While Girls Team 2 played Clayton North, Aimsleigh, Sacred Heart and then Huntingdale in the Semi Final. Both girls’ teams won two games but at the same time each team lost two as well. It was really sad because both teams wanted to go to the grand final and didn’t make it. There’s always next year to get to the grand final!!

All the girls in the Girls Rounders Squad agreed that playing rounders on Gala Day was a great experience. After all of that we ended up third. GO OAKLEIGH PS!!

Rounders Mixed - By Michael and Elijah

On Friday, 20th March at Gala Day, we had an excellent day of games against other schools in our region. We had won one game because the other teams were a little too good. Everyone's sportsmanship was really amazing, the games were so fun because everyone was kind and supportive.

We did great with batting, pitching and fielding (getting them out by either catching the ball or striking them out). I caught a ball when it got hit to me and got them out!

We had a great time with other schools. The highlights of the team were batting, especially Michael R. Everyone tried their best and we had a great time together.

Basketball Girls - By Ana and Emili

The Girls Basketball teams had a great day at Summer Gala Day on Friday, 20th March at Batesford Reserve basketball stadium.

Girls basketball A team made it to the grand final! On the team was Ana, Emili, Ting Ting, Dahlia, Arianna, Mia F, Felicity M, Melisa and of course, Kon, our coach. We played Clarinda PS, and we won 18 - 2. Then, we played Holy Redeemer and we tied 6-6. After a break, we played Aimsleigh Park. We got into the semi-final where we played North Clayton with a score of 16 – 2. We played hard and got in the grand final but we lost 16 - 2. We got the second place, Runners-Up pennant! Overall, we came 2nd and had a great day! Well done to everyone for showing respect to the opposition schools. Thanks to our coach!!

Girls basketball B team finished the day in 8th position. The team was Halima, Celine, Aamilah, Evie, Catherine, Nicole, Prarthana and Rebecca and coach Meg. We played against every school in the fixture but unfortunately lost every game. We learned a lot from our first game to our last game and enjoyed working together as a team.

ANZAC art for newsletter

The Grade 3s & 4s have created some beautiful watercolour artworks to commemorate ANZAC Day. Some of these are up on display at the front office and some are on display at the Oakleigh RSL.

Lest we forget.

Welcome Dance

On Tuesday, 31st March, students performed at this year’s Welcome Dance. The theme was Anthems, where we danced to many well-known songs from YMCA by The Village People’s to Wanna Be by The Spice Girls.

During the term, each year level learnt and performed two dances, and the whole school also performed two dances. These whole school dances are a highlight of the school year, with many parents joining in and dancing alongside students. The energy, smiles and sense of fun filled the school gym. The Welcome Dance is a wonderful way to start of the year, bringing everyone together through performance and creating opportunities to meet other people through dance.

Easter Concert

For the first time, Oakleigh Primary School had an Easter Concert featuring performances from the Foundation to Year 2 students. The concert took place during a special assembly on the last day of Term 1.

Students performed two songs they had learnt in class: one dance and a song accompanied by instruments. The audience also enjoyed a special performance from the Year 1/2 Choir.

Students performed with confidence and joy, making it a wonderful celebration of Easter. It was a lovely way to conclude Term 1 and begin the school holidays.
