Rail Awareness & Safety Education
This week our year 3-6 students participated in a Metro Trains Victoria incursion, where they learned practical skills for travelling safely and confidently on Melbourne’s public transport network.
The session covered journey planning, helping students understand timetables, service updates, and how to map out a trip.
They explored behaviour and expectations on trains and platforms, including key laws, common signage, and the importance of courteous behaviour.
Students also learned about Myki ticketing, including and how to tap on and off correctly.
Our facilitator also talked with students about the serious impacts of trespassing and helped them understand why keeping away from tracks and restricted areas is so important for everyone’s safety.
Finally, students located emergency assistance buttons on platforms and inside carriages, learning when and how to use them. This incursion strengthened students’ independence and real‑world problem‑solving skills, giving them confidence to travel safely and responsibly on public transport.
Some of our students summarised their learning in the reflections below.
