Year Level Learning

What's Been Happening Around Wembley

In this section, our Year Level teaching teams usually publish a short slide show that summarises and showcases learning and events from the classrooms. Considering our teachers have been working hard to ensure students have been settling into their new grades, we have simplified this process for this first newsletter, choosing instead to publish a summary page for each year level.

We really hope you enjoy this collection of photos from our first five weeks of school showcasing all the learning and fun at Wembley!

NAPLAN

NAPLAN testing for students in Years 3 and 5 will take place from Wednesday 11 March (Week 7) through to Monday 23 March (Week 9).

Most students will complete their tests during the initial testing period from Wednesday to Friday in Week 7, with catch-up sessions scheduled during Week 8 for any students who are absent.

Our teaching teams have begun preparing students by building familiarity with the types of tasks they will encounter and helping them feel confident and comfortable with the testing environment. Teachers have also started contacting families where accessibility adjustments may be appropriate to support individual learning needs.

If you have any questions about NAPLAN or your child’s participation, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.

Year 3 parents and carers, please find detailed information about the NAPLAN testing and timeline here: https://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/for-parents-carers

Curriculum Overviews

In the coming week, families will receive our Curriculum Overviews, which outline the learning scope and sequence and key learning cycles for each year level across the year.

These overviews are designed to help families understand the topics and areas of learning their children will be engaging with, and to support conversations at home about learning and progress.

Curriculum Overviews will be shared via the Sentral Parent Portal for your reference.

Core Learning

As is our usual practice at Wembley, we began Term 1 with our “First 15 Days of Learning” program. During this time, students focused on building strong classroom connections and community, while re-establishing school routines, lesson structures and the foundational skills needed for a successful year of learning.

Our teams and students have now well and truly transitioned into core learning cycles across all curriculum areas. Students are engaging with rich mentor texts in English, building writing stamina and confidence, strengthening their place value and number knowledge in Mathematics, and developing phonics skills in the junior years.

It has been wonderful to see students settling into their learning routines and demonstrating a positive start to the school year.

Device Update- New Time Limits

As families will be aware, updated Department of Education guidance last year introduced new expectations for digital device use in primary schools, including recommended time limits for students.

Now that signed Digital Device Usage Agreements are being returned, teaching teams will begin using digital devices with students as part of their learning programs. Device use will be carefully planned and aligned with the Department’s guidance, including recommended time limits of up to 90 minutes per day for students in Years 3–6, with more limited use in the early years.

Digital devices will be used to support learning alongside a strong focus on reading, writing, mathematics and hands-on classroom activities.
