Summer Fun - Asthma Care

Summer Fun - Asthma Care

Summer holidays are a great time to relax and have fun. If your child has been diagnosed with Asthma, however, there are a few things that you need to address over the holiday period.

We know you want your child to have a positive and healthy start to their next school year. Looking after your child's asthma over the holidays can mean less time off school when they return in the new year, and less time off work for you.

Asthma Australia have some useful tips for managing asthma over the summer period and a smooth return to school:

  • Keep using your child’s preventer medicine as directed over the summer holidays. Check your child’s medicines and puffers to make sure they’re still in date.

  • If you’re leaving the house or going away, make sure you pack your child’s asthma medicine(s) and their spacer.

  • Before the new school year starts, make a booking with the doctor to check your child's Asthma Action Plan. You'll need this for Term 1, 2025. Book in early as doctors can have limited appointments over the Christmas period.

  • Use helpful resources. Asthma Australia, for instance, has a checklist that can help you prepare for school, as well as useful tools for managing asthma, such as the Asthma Control Questionnaire, and information on thunderstorm asthma.
