Year 10 Students vs Library Staff Reading Challenge Update

As at 17 June 2026, the reading tallies are as follows:

Year 10 Students: 92

Library Staff: 158

Readers may note that the Year 10 figure has, unfortunately, not changed since it was last reported, whilst the Library Staff figure has increased a little. Reading of any appropriate book is fine – including eBooks and eAudiobooks – thus, parents of Year 10 students, particularly, please refer to the next point to encourage reading over the holidays!

Holiday Borrowing

All books loaned to students from 15 June 2026 will be due back at the beginning of Term 3. As reading is such a crucial skill to develop and maintain – even in the holidays! – parents might like to remind students to pop in and grab some reading material for the break. Travelling interstate, or overseas (lucky you!) and do not want to lug extra baggage around? Our Wheelers eBook/eAudiobook collection is available anytime, anywhere – as is Comics Plus

Name: Ms Rebecca Combrink (Literacy Teacher, Art Teacher and Teacher Librarian – St Stephen Gaudete Campus)

What is the best book you have read recently?

I have recently started the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, by Matt Dinniman - I would highly recommend this to people wanting to get back into reading!

What is your favourite genre to read, or to recommend?

My favourite genre is probably fantasy or dystopia, but I try to read a wide range to help me recommend books for each student’s personal taste.

If you could only recommend one book to everyone, what would it be?

I think in our current world climate more people should read or revisit 1984 by George Orwell.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not at the Library?

In addition to working in the library I teach Acutis Literacy, which has been wonderful this year. Outside of school I enjoy reading and playing video games.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be, and why?

I think teleportation would be the most useful power - I like the idea of being able to get to school without worrying about traffic!

Name: Mrs Leonie Johnson (Teacher Librarian)

What is the best book you have read recently?

I do not often read a full series. I am not good at waiting for the next instalment and instead swap to something else. So, Lynette Noni’s Medoran Chronicles and Jennifer Lynn Barnes’s The Inheritance Games are two that have had me hooked.

What is your favourite genre to read, or to recommend?

This changes frequently. I gravitate to mysteries, but often find a fantasy or a romance comes to the top of my ever-growing TBR (To Be Read) pile/tower.

If you could only recommend one book to everyone, what would it be?

This is a hard one to answer. I tend to recommend whatever I have loved most recently, or find out what someone is in the mood to read - a challenge (either in theme or complexity), something more light-hearted or fun, or to read something similar to a book they have enjoyed recently.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not at the library?

Maybe a little obvious, but reading and, also, scrapbooking, photography, a few other crafty things, and spending time with my grandchildren.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be, and why?

I would love to be able to slow time to stretch it out when I am doing something I love doing - like reading a great book - and then have time move more quickly when doing jobs like the housework. I think the reason is obvious…housework should not interfere with a good read!

So, there you have it – a little insight into the minds and lives of the St Monica’s College, Epping Library staff. We look forward to sharing more Library News with you next term!
