Science

Grade 5/6 

Students have continued exploring light in Science. Last week, they learned about light refraction by exploring a range of experiments and investigations. Students were able to distinguish this type of light behaviour from light reflection, light transmission, and light absorption. 

Grade 3/4 

Students applied what they are learning about heat transfer, to real world contexts. Last week, we explored the creation of popcorn! Students learned that as heat transfers to a popcorn kernel, it begins to build steam under the surface of the husk. When the steam and pressure becomes too great, it bursts open, spilling the starchy insides out and colling instantly into the delicious popcorn we all know and love! Of course, we had to investigate this ourselves and so fresh popcorn was made and enjoyed by every student. The Boorai smelled amazing - like stepping into a cinema!

Grade 2 

Students have begun creating their own ultimate hot wheels track/set. Students are combining what they have learned about forces, to their knowledge of building to create car garages, lifts, car washes, multi-story car parks, towns, and mechanic shops. These creations will be coming home week 9 so create some space, because they are amazing!

Grade 1

Students spent some time exploring sound through the use of tuning forks and some inquiry stations. After this, demonstrated what they have learnt about sound, pitch and volume by creating bands with their very own home-made instruments. Instruments included maracas, guitars, flutes, pipes, drums, and even a xylophone! Students demonstrated that their instruments make sounds through vibrations when they are plucked, strummed, or shaken.

Prep

Students have been creating their own toys in science and demonstrating how they use forces to move. Students have created toys that push, pull, twist, slide and even bounce! Many imaginative creations have been made with wild and wonderful details.

Science week 

This exciting week had the art room buzzing with excitement. Students worked in groups to create cloud dough, using primarily cornflower and conditioner. It was super soft and left our hands moisturized and smelling fruity.  Grade 5 and 6 students worked every day alongside our science captains Ella and Chloe to support students in the lower levels to make their cloud dough. This support led to a very fun, well organized and positive learning experience for everyone.

In the garden

Garden club has expanded along with the beautiful weather. Last week we had over 25 members attend and help us prepare our garden beds for our spring and summer crops. Many students were delighted to see some tomatoes still trying to grow. These were protected with cover crops during the winter and have survived to see another spring. We weeded, planted new seedlings and transplanted some lettuce seedlings that naturally grew from a lettuce that went to seed late last season.
