Senior School Update

This term has been full of engaging learning experiences and exciting events for our 5/6 learning community. From mathematical explorations to historical discoveries, sports competitions, and fun excursions, our students have had a memorable term. We are excited to share highlights from some of our student authors:

Maths Adventures in the 5/6 Learning Community - Colton Martz

We have been learning decimal fractions and area and perimeter, just to name a few. If you don’t know what decimal fractions are, they are decimal numbers. They also appear on place value charts which are the digits that have Ones, Tens, Hundreds, and Thousands. Decimal numbers are shown to the right of the one's column. The place values' names for them are Tenths (0.1), Hundredths (0.01), and Thousandths (0.001). Area and perimeter are used for measuring spaces like rooms. When we were learning about it, one of the activities we did was measuring one of the rooms in the portables. Other things we did were designing gardens and towns, which we did in our grid books. When we measured the rooms, we used metres and centimetres. Those were just a couple of things we did in maths, but it sure was fun.

Exploring Australia's History in English - Alyssa Dean

This term in English, we have been learning about Australia’s history. We read The Night They Stormed Eureka, a realistic fiction book about the Eureka Stockade. It tells you about when gold miners rebelled against paying money for gold licences. We also wrote our own realistic fiction stories about the gold mines in Ballarat. We learnt about the Eureka Hotel, owned by James Bentley, Peter Lalor, who lost his arm during the stockade, and how people acted during the stockade. In Core Literacy, we have been practising our prefixes and suffixes while having plenty of fun writing nonsense words. These words are made-up words but have suffixes, such as plurals, that involve spelling rules. When we write nonsense words, we consider the spelling rules and suffixes that might be needed.

Sporting Achievements in the Lightning Premiership - Alex Jones & Belle Tacang

Lightning Premiership is where young superstars move on to harder competition in T-ball, footy, netball, and soccer. They have done great in Inter-school sports games and went to the next level to verse other schools. The players worked together to win, and in the end, the AFL team came runners-up. T-ball came third, and netball came last. Sadly, soccer did too but everyone had fun.

Excursion to Cranbourne's Social Fair - Ollie Cowling

On Wednesday, the 12th of June, the 5/6 learning community took a bus trip to Cranbourne where they entered the Social Fair. The Social Fair consisted of three main activities: the playground, a huge indoor area with multiple slides, swings, and many more things; mini golf, with 18 challenges, some being a cakewalk and others taking many tries, with different themes from ninja to dinosaurs and zombies; and rock climbing. A lot of 5/6s weren't too keen on trying rock climbing, but they did anyway and did not regret it. Out of all the rock walls, by far the hardest was a sports-themed one. It was mainly fake grass, and there were a few hand grips that hung out, so it was doable. At the very top, there was a basketball hoop, and if you touched it, you beat it. As I remember, no one ended up beating that wall.

Girls AFL Day - Kayra Funilas

Girls AFL was on the 21st of June, Friday 2024. It was really fun and challenging. We went on a bus to a footy oval in Lakeside. You play against different schools from the district. We all had a fantastic time with everyone. Footy is an awesome sport, tough but also great to play.

In this issue
