Dear Families,

Congratulations to our incredible 2026 Girls Soccer Team on becoming Premiers! What an outstanding achievement!

The girls will now play on the 18th of August at Petty’s Reserve.  We wish them the best and we will all be barracking for them.

Grandparents and Special Persons Day

Last Friday, we celebrated Grandparents and Special Persons Day with a beautiful Mass, classroom activities, and a shared lunch. It was wonderful to welcome so many special guests to our school.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the day such a memorable celebration of faith, family and community. We are grateful for the love, wisdom and support our grandparents and special people bring to the lives of our students.

A special thank you to Ms Cesarin for organising the day, and to our leaders for their support and leadership throughout the event.

Thank you also to all staff for helping make it such a special occasion for our school community. Your enthusiasm and teamwork are truly appreciated.

Athletics Day 

Today, St Kevin's Primary School held our annual Athletics Carnival. Students from Prep to Year 6 enthusiastically participated in a variety of athletic events, proudly representing their house colours in the quest to become the St Kevin's Athletics Carnival Champions. Despite the freezing conditions, students demonstrated wonderful enthusiasm, resilience and sportsmanship.

Unfortunately, due to deteriorating weather, we were unable to complete all events and the carnival had to conclude early.

A heartfelt thank you to Mr Montalto for his outstanding organisation and preparation of the carnival. Thank you also to our dedicated staff, the many parent volunteers and family members who came to support and encourage our students throughout the day. Your generosity and enthusiasm helped make the event such a positive experience.

Over the coming weeks, students will have the opportunity to complete the remaining athletics events during their PE lessons, ensuring everyone has the chance to participate and showcase their skills.

Book Week

As we lead up to Book Week, Sienna Montalto (Literacy Leader) is going to be running a few voluntary competitions for our students. She will inform the students of these a little closer to the date, but there will definitely be prizes to be won!

These will include: 

• Match the childhood book to the teacher 
• Design a new front cover for your favourite book

• Colouring competition for Symphony of Stories

   

On Monday 24 August (Week 7, Term 3), St Kevin's will celebrate Book Week!

This year's CBCA Book Week theme, Symphony of Stories, celebrates the joy and power of reading.

Students are invited to dress as their favourite book character. Please ensure costumes are school-appropriate and based on age-appropriate literature.

Our celebrations will begin with a Book Week Parade at 9:00 am in the stadium. Parents and carers are warmly invited to attend. Please sign in at the school office on arrival.

We are also excited to welcome children's author Amy Adeney, who will present workshops throughout the day, inspiring our students' love of reading and writing.

We look forward to celebrating this special day together!

Keynote from the Religious Education Symposium

A few weeks ago Eva Tomazos, Con Tomazos and Lil Cesarin attended the Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Education Religious Education Symposium.

At a recent presentation, Professor Brother David Hall shared four key ideas that help us grow as people and as a faith community: Content, Character, Commitment and Love.

Content

Learning is an important part of our faith. By growing in knowledge and understanding, we come to know Jesus more deeply and strengthen our relationship with Him.

Character

Good character is built through our daily choices. We develop virtues such as kindness, honesty and respect by practising them consistently, learning from positive role models and reflecting on how we live our values each day.

Commitment

Growth requires change. As we learn and mature, we are called to have open hearts and minds, embracing new ways of living that help us become the best version of ourselves.

Love

Love is at the heart of our Christian faith. We are called to seek the good of others and to recognise God's beauty in people and in creation, rather than being distracted by the things of the world. As Pope Benedict XVI reminds us, true beauty is always connected to goodness and draws us closer to God.

As teachers at St Kevin's we are called to illuminate the mind allowing God to fill the heart with fire and love. When we love well, we are able to discern what is beautiful and are filled with God’s grace.

100 Days of Prep!

On Friday 7th August, our amazing Prep students will celebrate the exciting milestone of 100 Days of School with the theme "100 Days Brighter." Students will enjoy a special ceremony, exciting classroom activities, a Science Incursion and plenty of fun as they celebrate all they have achieved in their first 100 days of learning.

In such a short time, our Preps have grown in confidence, developed wonderful friendships and become enthusiastic learners. We are so proud of everything they have accomplished and look forward to celebrating this special milestone with them.

A special thank you to Miss Montalto and Mrs Mafodda for all their planning and organisation in creating such a memorable, fun and engaging day for our Prep students.

Prep Interviews

Prep 2027 interviews commenced this week with both new and current families. It was wonderful to meet prospective students and hear the many positive comments about St Kevin's and our welcoming school community. The interviews provided an opportunity for families to share valuable information about their children as they begin their journey with us.

We look forward to welcoming our newest students and families to the St Kevin's community in 2027.

Art Show

Preparations for this year's Art Show are well underway, with Mr Con and staff already hard at work bringing together what promises to be a wonderful celebration of creativity at St Kevin’s.

Over the coming weeks, we'll be sharing regular sneak peeks and highlights as excitement builds towards the Art Show. 

Be sure to save the date: Tuesday September 8th and Wednesday 9th September, as we come together to celebrate the incredible artistic talents of our students. The PFA Team are planning many fun activities for Wednesday 9th September as this is our Major Fund raiser for 2026.

Our Art Show is always one of the highlights of the school year, and we can't wait to share it with our community. 

Supporting our staff while planning for the future

Currently, all Catholic schools are working through planning and budgeting activities for 2027 to ensure we are well placed to support our staff, students and school communities in the coming year. This includes looking at how we can accommodate the changes likely to flow from a new Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA) with school staff.

We recognise the significant financial pressures many households are facing, and we are making a conscious effort to ensure these costs are not passed on through significant fee increases.

We will continue to keep our parent community informed throughout this process. As always, our focus remains on maintaining strong school communities and continuing to deliver a high-quality Catholic education for every student.

International Students

At the end of this week, we farewell six of our visiting students: Axida, Amina, Gracie, Jayden, Edmond and Evie.

We sincerely thank them for their contributions to St Kevin’s over the past four weeks. It has been a pleasure having them as part of our school community, where they have embraced both learning and socialising with our students and staff.

We wish them all the very best in their future studies and hope they have a safe and pleasant journey home.

Father’s Day Breakfast

We warmly invite all fathers (and father figures) to join us for a Father’s Day Breakfast in the Gathering Space on Friday 4th September, from 7:00am to 8:30am.

Last semester the SRC students implemented a few changes around our school which included the initiation of quite a few new lunch time clubs that they have been running themselves. I would like to thank and congratulate the students from last semester who worked so well together to achieve these changes and I look forward to working with a new bunch of students over the next 2 terms.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) focus for this fortnight is "I let teachers teach and learners learn."

This focus encourages every student to take responsibility for creating a calm, respectful and productive learning environment. When students listen, follow instructions, stay on task and allow others to concentrate, everyone has the opportunity to learn and achieve their best. It also allows teachers to spend more time teaching and supporting students, rather than managing interruptions.

It has been wonderful to see students demonstrating this expectation across the school. In particular, classes in the Senior Building have enjoyed participating in role-play activities, acting out both expected and unexpected behaviours related to this focus. These engaging scenarios have helped students recognise the positive choices they can make each day and the impact those choices have on the learning of others.

The Grade 5/6 students have been working on another literacy program to further develop their reading and comprehension skills in Italian. Through the comic 'Sono Affamato' ("I'm Hungry"), they have been building their ability to read in Italian, understand Italian, and use Italian expressions while also strengthening their everyday literacy skills.
