Acting Assistant Principal Update

Luke Kleinig

Welcome to Week 2 of Term 2. I hope everyone has settled seamlessly back into the rhythm of the school term following the Easter break.

Learning Walks and School Visits

Last Thursday, we conducted a 'learning walk' through our classrooms. It is a huge privilege for me to regularly be able to walk through the school with the Leadership Team and see our students and staff so deeply engaged in learning and teaching. Last week's learning walk also included some first-time learning walkers, and it is a genuine honour to be able to share that experience with other staff in the school. So much can be learnt from the great staff here at APS, and getting the chance to see it in action is brilliant. The calm, focused atmosphere across the year levels is a testament to the hard work of our staff in establishing strong, productive routines early in the term, and to the incredible APS students who are consistently ready to learn.

Following this on Friday, we kept with the theme of teachers learning in different spaces. Brody and I had the opportunity to visit another school, Templestowe Heights Primary School. These visits are a fantastic way for our teams to collaborate with peers, observe different instructional practices in action, and bring insights back to APS to further enhance our own teaching and learning programs.

ANZAC Day Commemoration

Last Friday, we held our ANZAC Day commemoration during a special assembly. The service was led by our Year 6 students, who clearly articulated the meaning behind the day. A special acknowledgement goes to our students across the school, who demonstrated respect, attentiveness, and maturity for the duration of the assembly.

APS Fun Run

Yesterday’s Fun Run was a great success, with all students from Prep to Year 6 having the opportunity to participate in a fun and inclusive running event. Students in the younger years completed laps of the oval at Alphington Park, earning points for their house. Students in Years 3-6 completed 2-3 laps of the 1km track to earn points for their house and to gain qualification for the upcoming district cross country.

A big thank you to Natalie for doing an incredible job organising the APS Fun Run, and to the many parent volunteers who supported with marshalling and timing the races. It was also fantastic to see so many families in attendance to cheer our students on.

District Cross Country

The Ivanhoe District Cross Country will be held on the 15th of May. The students with the fastest times in the boys and girls 9, 10, 11, and 12 age groups from our Fun Run will be selected to represent the school and will receive their permission forms via Compass.

Prep Tours

Following a great start to the term and year as a whole, Shane and I, alongside the Grade 6 Leaders and our 2026 Prep classes and teachers, are excited to continue showcasing our calm and engaged classrooms and great school to prospective families.

We have several upcoming Prep Tours for 2027 enrolments. These will all commence at 9:30am on the following dates:

  • Friday, 1st May
  • Friday, 8th May
  • Thursday, 14th May
  • Thursday, 4th June
  • Friday, 12th June

STEAM Fair

Please save the date for our annual STEAM Fair, which will be held on Wednesday, 3rd June from 3.45pm. Students across all year levels will be working on exciting projects in class as part of their Term 2 STEAM Units. We will share more information regarding the specific projects, home learning tasks for the senior years, and how families can get involved in the coming weeks.

Have a great week!
