We thank You for the vibrant gift of our diverse school community. Bless our students, staff, and families as we reintroduce Italian Day. May this celebration of culture and language reignite unity, deepen empathy, and inspire mutual respect. Guide us to cherish one another’s heritage always.

Amen.

Dear School Community,

Our recent Italian Day was a joyful celebration of language, tradition, and community spirit! We were thrilled to reintroduce this event after a long absence to reignite our school’s rich tradition of cultural learning.

In our diverse school, where many families speak two, three, or four languages at home, our LOTE (Italian) program serves as a vital bridge. Bringing Italian Day back provided an immersive experience where students could explore culture through hands-on discovery. By stepping into Italian traditions, students deepen global awareness and learn to value the rich backgrounds of their peers. Experiencing diverse cultures firsthand fosters empathy, reduces prejudices, and promotes an environment of mutual respect, tolerance, and inclusion.

The celebration began in the Hall at 9:00 am with a welcome from our LOTE Captains, followed by our whole-school parade where Preps through Grade 6 proudly presented their Italian creations to visiting families.

Throughout the day, students immersed themselves in dynamic cultural activities:

  • Cultural Incursions: Dancing the Tarantella during the interactive Fiesta Italiana performance.
  • Culinary Demonstrations: Learning traditional pasta making with Mrs. Turco, Mrs. Restaino, and Mr. Corio.
  • Art & History: Crafting Roman helmets, clay urns, tissue-paper Colosseums, gondolas, and Sistine Chapel art, plus fruit-and-vegetable portraits.
  • Language & Sports: Solving Pinocchio puzzles and Italian word finds, alongside traditional Bocce and soccer on the oval.
  • Italian Feast: Sharing delicious pizza and gelato during lunch.

Reigniting this cherished day allowed students to share pride in cultural heritage while building a stronger, more connected school community. Collaborating across activities helped students enhance social skills and learn to work harmoniously with others.

Grazie mille to our LOTE team, staff, parent helpers, and LOTE Captains for making this long-awaited return such a brilliant success!

Regards

Brian Martin
