Road Safety

Helmets, belts & the school gate
The everyday habits and the parking rules that keep the zone outside your gate safe.
WHY IT MATTERS
Helmets, fitted properly
70% fewer head injuries 65% fewer fatal head injuries
That's the reduction from wearing a properly fitted, Australian Standards-approved helmet. Helmets are required by law on bikes and e-bikes in NSW. Adults check the fit before every ride.
1 Two fingers between eyebrows and helmet | 2 Straps form a 'V' just below the ears | 3 Two fingers between strap and chin | 4 A grown-up checks it's buckled |
FIVE-STEP TEST
Ready for an adult seatbelt?
1 Back against the seat back | 2 Knees bend over the seat edge | 3 Sash belt sits across mid-shoulder | 4 Lap belt sits across the top of the thighs | 5 Can hold this position the whole trip |
Under 7s must use an approved child car seat by law. Children under 13 are safest in the back seat.
Before holiday travel: book a free child car seat check through Transport for NSW or your local council.
Park legally in the school zone
School zones: 8–9.30am & 2.30–4pm on school days
