All Schools Cross Country Gold Medalists

Congratulations to Year 10 students Riley Bain, Maddie Marshall and Georgie Costelloe, who were awarded Gold Medals for the U17 Teams Event at the All Schools Cross Country at Symmons Plains last term.  

The College took a small group of students to this huge event, with runners from schools from all over the State. Students are competing individually, and also as part of a team. The top 3 finishers from each school in each age group are compared, with results calculated to determine the team placings.  The results weren't published until a few weeks after the event, so it was a wonderful surprise to receive Gold Medals in the mail for Riley, Maddie and Georgie.  St Patrick’s College and Clarence High were 2nd and 3rd place respectively.  

Secondary Swimming Team

We are extremely proud of the efforts of the Secondary Swimming Team competing at the SSATIS carnival on Thursday 3 September.  Many of the team stepped out of their comfort zone to swim in events that ensured there was a Mount Carmel competitor in every event.  Their outstanding team effort saw the team finish 5th out of 13 schools in the Girls Junior Shield.

Highlights included:

• Maria Triffett in Year 7 for swimming in all possible events, finishing 4th in 50m Freestyle and 50m Breaststroke and 5th in U14 Butterfly.

• U13s 4 x 50m Freestyle Relay Team of Maria Triffett, Charlotte Hastings, Sophie Woolford and Evelyn Giffard, winning their heat and finishing 4th overall.  

• Lina Mahmoud finishing 4th in U14 Backstroke.

• U16 4 x 50m Freestyle Relay team of Ariane Jones,  Zara Taylor, Meghan Johnson and Ruby Stokes-Little, finishing 5th overall. 

• Year 7 students Christelle Ghanam, Ivy Martin, Astrid Carins and Eden Kingston; and Year 8 students, Isla Christie and Bonnie Johnston for swimming out of age group, and doing a fantastic job, even at short notice.

The team will now turn its attention to the State SATIS Carnival tomorrow Friday 18 September. 

Primary Hockey

This term, Mount Carmel has been represented by a team participating in Hockey Tasmania’s  Year 5/6 School Hockey Sevens (Half Field) competition.  The team includes students continuing from Term 2 grass hockey, some younger Year 3 and 4 students, and others who are new to the sport.  Mount Carmel has competed strongly in the mixed competition against teams from Sacred Heart, Princes St, Hutchins, New Town and Northern Christian School.   

The players have adapted really well to the faster astroturf surface, and have continued to develop and improve their skills as the weeks have progressed.   Well done to all the hockey players on a great season!

Special thanks to Year 9 students and U15 State Players, Sophie Halliday and Evie Gmelig, for giving up their time to Coach the team, and Julie Dewsbery for managing the team.
