Beginning Of Term 2:

Sports News

SOC Girls Football Team

For the first time in almost a decade, South Oakleigh College had a girls football team! The junior team was really excited about playing and put in their best effort. They may have lost both their games, but their progress from the first half to their last was incredible, to the point we won the last quarter against the winning team of the day. It was great to see a group of young people so keen to play footy, despite not many playing outside of school. Overall it was a great day by the team of 20, but stand outs included Semira & Kiana, Lidia, Jade, Nadia, Mabel, Lavinia and Millie!

This semester our year 10 Active for Life students have particpated in two of our three excursions for the term. The first being squash, and the second bouldering. Majority of students have not participated in either of the activities and enjoyed learning new skill sets and rules. Students gained access to special deals at both, with a potential for a climbing club at the bouldering gym in Cheltenham. Overall, the students are excited for our final excursion, learning yet another new skill in fencing.

Senior and Intermediate Boys Netball

The senior and intermediate boys netball was held at Gloria Pyke Netball Centre on Monday 5th May 2025. There was a lot of interest from students in participating and SOC was fortunate enough to put together two teams for this event. The A team was unfortunately beaten in their pool by some tough competition from the division schools. The B team, however, finished top of their pool, having won the final. The boys displayed the school values of Resilience and Teamwork in all the games they played ensuring they had a fun day whilst doing so.

Volleyball Tryouts

Written by Ryder Rutledge - Year 8 boys netball try-outs/training began in the later weeks of term 1 and commenced after our holiday break. My initial thoughts about playing netball were doubtful. Doubtful in the sense that I didn’t really think playing netball would be so star-spangled awesome, but when the teams came together and training began, my mind along with most of my peers minds, were changed very fast. Playing netball with my friends changed my mind about the sport. When the Gala Day competition came around everyone was so happy just to be there that we cared not for the outcome of the tournament. It was a great team-building experience for everyone, and I learnt so much about my friends that had been previously undercover. I think it was a great opportunity to socialize and learn new skills and I believe everyone should get a chance at a learning experience like that. After the competition, I wondered if my teammates agreed with my thoughts about playing the sport and they had similar ideas to me, many of them already talking about signing up next year to continue playing. Overall everyone who played learnt a lot along the way and built strong relationships with the teammates we around us. Thank you also to Estelle and Tamsyn for coaching us throughout.
