Foundation News

Dear Foundation Families,

Here is an update on what we've been up to lately, and what a busy few weeks it has been! Our Foundation students continue to impress us with their effort, enthusiasm, and growing sense of pride in their learning. They are making wonderful choices by staying focused, celebrating their achievements, and reflecting on how they can grow even further as learners. 

Tabloid Sports Day was a great day for our school community. It was wonderful to see so many students proudly wearing their house colours and getting involved in the activities. Our Foundation students participated enthusiastically throughout the day and represented their houses well. 

We also shared a special moment watching our butterflies emerge from their chrysalises and take flight into the world. Witnessing this transformation was a great experience, as there was plenty of excitement as they headed off to explore their new environment!

In Health, students have been exploring resilience, learning to recognise how their bodies feel when they are stressed, anxious, or worried, and practising calming strategies such as breathing techniques, to support their wellbeing.

In Writing, our students have been working hard to include rich detail in their sentences (who, what, when, and where) and are now using conjunctions to extend and connect their ideas. It has been wonderful to see their confidence and creativity grow throughout the term.

In Maths, we have been exploring shapes through hands-on experiences. Students have enjoyed shape hunts inside and outside the classroom, identifying shapes in their environment and describing their features.

With just a couple of days to go, we are so proud of everything our Foundation students have achieved this term. Thank you as always for your continued support.

Year 1 News

Last Friday, the Year 1 students visited Scienceworks to celebrate our learning in our Knowledge Building unit, Change is All Around Us.

We travelled by bus and began our day in the Lightning Theatre. We watched exciting science experiments about how clouds, lightning, and thunder are formed.

We enjoyed our snacks in the Planetarium foyer and marvelled at the magnificent moon, created by international British artist Luke Jerrum, which is four meters in diameter and bright enough to light the room. 

Afterwards, we explored the Think Ahead and Sportsworks exhibitions. Students learned more about ecosystems, discovered how our actions can help the environment, and enjoyed testing their skills in a range of sporting challenges, including racing against Cathy Freeman!

It was a wonderful day of hands-on learning, curiosity and fun, and a special way to celebrate all that we have learned throughout the term.

Year 3 News

Year 3 have had a busy term!  We have been learning all about persuasive writing structures and devices such as rhetorical questions and high modal words, and authors' devices such as the power of 3, while reading 'The Wild Robot'. Students have all shared some very engaging insights into the story of Roz and Brightbill, and how the robot slowly became wild and built an amazing community of friends and family on the island.  All the persuasive pieces about ‘Does Roz deserve to stay on the island?’ have included some great persuasive devices and compelling arguments both for and against.

We have really immersed ourselves into learning about 'The Wild Robot'; in Mathematics we made detailed maps of the island and used this to practise our location words and navigation. 

We connected 'The Wild Robot' to our Knowledge Building topic of community and what makes a community. In between each of our classrooms we have made our very own community with all the services and buildings we might need, in order to have a safe and supportive community. We also gave ourselves roles in our community and talked about rules that apply to different places and laws that govern the whole community. As our homework task for the last few weeks of term, students were tasked with interviewing a community contributor and making a poster to celebrate how different people have different and important roles within our community. These posters will all be on display in our learning showcase in the last week of term to share our learning with our school community. 

Year 6 News

Melbourne Walking Tour & Footscray Market

On Wednesday, the Grade 6s went on an excursion to Melbourne and Footscray as part of our Knowledge Building unit. We have spent most of the term studying the way migration has shaped the world today. It was awesome to walk around Melbourne on a Walking Tour to learn all about the history of the city. On our way home, we stopped in at Footscray to visit the market and witness how the Vietnamese community has influenced Melbourne, thanks to migration!

The excursion was very educational and interactive. It was nice to have a day out in the city. I learned a lot about the Yarra River and also the bridge with the countries on it - it showed me how diverse Australia really is! April M 

The Melbourne excursion was fun and enjoyable to do. We got to the city by train and we walked on foot to Federation Square. We learnt a lot about the history of Melbourne and how places and the city were formed. We went to Footscray Market on the way home. It was crowded and filled with lots of food from different cultures. Overall, it was a good day. Rayan I

The Melbourne tour took us all around Melbourne and learning about the history of the place and what their name actually meant. Footscray Market was full of food, people and culture and some intriguing smells! At the market, I tried Boba (bubble tea) for the first time - it was OK but I prefer water! It was an amazing excursion. Sam R

On Wednesday, we caught the train to Melbourne and we had a tour guide named Joy show us around Melbourne. Something that I learned was that bees are made out of gold. Then, we went to visit Footscray Market. At the start, it smelt like meat but we soon discovered other sections. Most of our class had bubble tea and we had lots of fun!

Music News

Band Performance

Come and wish us a 'Happy School Holidays' and watch the band perform at our End Of Term Assembly, this Friday 26th June at 9:10am.

Book Week Performances

Next term as part of Book Week, we are looking for musicians to give some special performances. If you are having lessons on an instrument (either at school or outside of school) and have a piece or pieces you would like to play, keep an eye out for our special Musicians’ Meeting in Term 2. 

You can play one piece or several, by yourself, with a friend, or with a group!

We hope to have as many amazing musicians as possible, so get practising!

PE/Sport News

What an amazing day our recent Athletics day ended up being. The weather was stunning and the rain held off. Students and staff had a fantastic day. Thank you Mr A for organising another successful day and for all the parent volunteers who helped on the day. It really couldn't run so well without you.

Auslan Fun Facts

1. Auslan Has Its Own Grammar

Auslan (Australian Sign Language) is not simply English shown with hand signs. It has its own unique grammar, sentence structure, and rules.

2. Auslan is a Visual Language

Facial expressions, body movements and eye gaze are just as important as hand signs. They help show emotions, questions and meaning.

3. Every Country Has Different Sign Languages

Just as spoken languages differ around the world, sign languages do too! Auslan is different from American Sign Language (ASL) and New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL), although it shares some similarities with British Sign Language (BSL).

4. Fingerspelling is Only Part of Auslan

Auslan uses a two-handed fingerspelling alphabet to spell names, places, and words that don't have a specific sign. However, most communication uses signs rather than spelling every word.

5. Sign Names are Special

Many Deaf people are given a unique ‘sign name’ by the Deaf community. These sign names often reflect a person's personality, appearance, or interests.

6. Auslan was Recognised as a Community Language in 1987

Auslan was officially recognised by the Australian Government as a community language other than English in 1987, helping raise awareness and support for Deaf culture and communication.

Science Week runs from August 17–21 this year, which is Week 6 of Term 3. The theme is Seeds of Science - Nurturing Knowledge for all. Students will take part in themed Science Week lessons during their regular STEM classes at school.

We’re also offering an optional Science Week Challenge for students to complete at home. This may be a good school holiday project! Please see the image below for details.

Students may work individually or with siblings/friends. Creations should be brought to school by Wednesday 12th August, so that we can set up a display for classes to visit and enjoy.

We’re looking forward to seeing the creative designs that students come up with!
