Auslan Update

🤟 What We’ve Been Learning

Over the past few weeks in Auslan, students have been busy building their confidence and fine-tuning their signing skills. It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and growing independence when communicating in sign!

Students have been practising how to introduce themselves both formally and informally. This has included learning how to sign:

  • Good morning and good afternoon
  • How are you?
  • My name is…
  • My age
  • My birth date

We have been exploring how Auslan grammar differs from spoken English. Students are learning that the structure of a sentence in Auslan is not always the same as the way we say it in English. For example, information such as time (like a birthday or age) is often signed at the beginning of a sentence. Understanding these differences helps students become more accurate and respectful communicators in Auslan.

It has been fantastic to see students supporting one another, practising in pairs, and proudly sharing their introductions with the class. We are very proud of the progress they are making and their willingness to step outside their comfort zone to try something new.

I look forward to watch students’ confidence grow as they continue to build their skills in the weeks ahead! 🤟

Maybe have your child try and teach you this simple introduction?
