Last University Excursion of the Year

And just like that, our final Year 12 university tours for 2026 have wrapped up! The last stops on this year's journey were Victoria University (Footscray) and Swinburne University (Hawthorn).

Throughout the year, students were given the opportunity to visit their preferred universities, with excursions to six institutions, including:

• RMIT University
• La Trobe University (Bundoora)
• Monash University
• Deakin University
• Victoria University 
• Swinburne University 

At GSCC, we are committed to providing students with a wide range of post-school pathway opportunities. These university visits help students explore their options firsthand, empowering them to make informed decisions about their future studies and careers. We thank all students for their enthusiastic participation and wish them every success as they take the next step toward their future goals.

O'Connors Excursion

This week, our Year 10 Shepparton Show Me class, along with a group of self-elected students, visited the Shepparton O'Connors branch to learn more about the business and explore the career opportunities available to young people.

As part of the excursion, students and staff toured the branch and gained valuable insight into a range of career pathways, including Administration and Business Traineeships, Parts Interpreting, and Service Technician roles. The tour provided students with a practical understanding of the day-to-day operations and the skills required in each area.

Students also learned about O'Connors' Redstart Apprenticeship Program, which supports apprentices by assisting with training costs and providing the tools needed to help them succeed throughout their apprenticeship journey.

The O'Connors team spoke about the importance of staying at school and completing studies, explaining that employers often look for maturity, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills. Most importantly, they highlighted that being enthusiastic, willing to learn, and having a positive attitude can make a real difference when applying for work experience, traineeships, or apprenticeships.

Students were also encouraged to take the initiative by visiting the branch in person with a resume and introducing themselves to the team. School-based apprenticeships were discussed as another valuable pathway for students looking to gain hands-on experience while completing their education.

A big thank you to the O'Connors team for welcoming our students, sharing their experiences and career advice, outlining future opportunities, and providing a delicious morning tea. We greatly appreciate their ongoing support in helping students explore their career pathways.

• New Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice

Gain the legal knowledge required for professional practice while developing specialist expertise in criminal justice, crime prevention and offender behaviour through hands-on, industry-connected learning.

This double degree gives students the opportunity to understand both the legal frameworks that govern society and the complex social, psychological and technological factors that influence crime and justice.  Students will develop the legal knowledge required for admission to the Australian legal profession while gaining specialised expertise in criminology and criminal justice.A distinctive feature of this double degree is its focus on the future of law and justice.  Students will examine contemporary and future-focused issues such as cybercrime, digital criminology, artificial intelligence, legal technology and evolving approaches to crime prevention and justice reform.

• Studying Law at RMIT

The Bachelor of Laws brings law to life.  With coursework designed and delivered in close partnership with respected Australian law firms, you’ll be ready to hit the ground running upon graduation.

Delivered by leaders of industry in the heart of Melbourne, this 3-year law degree draws on deep industry connections to give students as much real-world experience as possible.  The practical component is balanced with a thorough theoretical grounding in the Australian legal system and fundamental legal principles and concepts. 

As well as learning how to analyse and solve problems involving questions of law, students will also develop a suite of invaluable skills that will prepare them for a career as a legal practitioner or in a law-related field.  Such skills include effective writing, drafting, advocacy, interviewing and advising, negotiation, teamwork and presentations. 

The VCE entry requirements are Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English other than EAL or at least 27 in English as an Additional Language (EAL), and a guaranteed ATAR of 88.00 (excluding adjustment factors).

 Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science/Master of Physiotherapy

Introduced by Swinburne in 2026, the Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science is designed to articulate to the 2-year Master of Physiotherapy.  For the first time, these two courses can be applied for through VTAC as a packaged option.  The VTAC Course code is:  3400214301.Students who attain an average mark of 70%+ higher in the Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science, are guaranteed direct entry into the Master of Physiotherapy.

• Bachelor of Science - Change in Course Structure

Commencing in 2027, new structural requirements will be implemented for the Bachelor of Science, placing a greater emphasis on the depth of disciplinary knowledge, while making course requirements clearer and easier to navigate.  Students will continue to have the flexibility to explore their interests and tailor their degree.

The key structural change is the move from a single-major course structure to one that requires students to complete either a major and minor, two majors, or an extended major. Students can look at this useful PDF to gain a better idea of the new structure - BSc Course Changes 2027.

1. Bachelor of Climate, Society and Economy

Harness your passion for climate action and turn it into a career that matters.  This innovative degree positions you as a leader of one of the most urgent and ambitious transformations of our time by advancing net zero transitions, building resilient communities and driving climate justice.

Beyond the classroom, students will engage with communities, policymakers, and industry leaders, gaining practical experience and making meaningful contributions to real-world initiatives.  Field trips, industry experience and study abroad opportunities offer immersive learning experiences, allowing students to witness firsthand the impacts of climate change and the diverse ways in which societies, businesses and ecosystems are responding.

1. Bachelor of Artificial Intelligence and Bachelor of Science

The Bachelor of Artificial Intelligence and Bachelor of Science combines technical capability with scientific knowledge, preparing you to apply emerging technologies to address complex challenges and accelerate discovery.

Students choose between two AI specialisations: Applied Artificial Intelligence, which focuses on applying existing AI technologies to solve real-world challenges, or Artificial Intelligence Algorithms and Models, which explores the technical foundations of AI and how it's designed, developed and evolved.

  Bachelor of Oral Health

Graduates of the Bachelor of Oral Health can practise as an oral health therapist, a dental therapist, or a dental hygienist.  In these roles, graduates may examine and diagnose oral and dental health conditions, plan oral health care, help prevent disease, provide clinical dental treatments, undertake oral health promotion, and perform orthodontic and preventative procedures, including impressions and applying topical fluoride or fissure sealants.  They will provide fillings and extract deciduous teeth for children and young adults as well as plan care, treat periodontal conditions and clean, scale and root plane teeth for people of all ages.  They will also take and interpret radiographs, and work in collaboration with other dental and health practitioners to improve oral health.

Graduates usually find employment in private practices, public hospitals, and the health services.

  Torrens University

Founded in 2013, Torrens University is Australia’s international university and vocational registered training organisation. Torrens offers courses from diplomas to bachelor degrees to research courses. 

Torrens University offers a range of courses in design, health, business, hospitality, technology, and education. 

Torrens has five campuses – Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Blue Mountains and Adelaide.

Torrens has four intakes per year - key dates - for both full-time and part-time higher education degree and diploma students, although the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School dates are different.Torrens offers full-fee courses only, no Commonwealth Supported Places are available.

  VCE Extension Studies on offer in 2027

• Deakin University – Deakin Accelerate

Deakin Accelerate is a distinctive VCE higher education program that allows students to study two first-year university subjects during Year 12. Studying one subject per trimester, this selective program gives students a head-start into university studies and also provides a potential contribution to their all-important ATAR score.Besides the challenge of taking on a university subject, this subject may also count as part of the VCE and contribute towards the ATAR as the fifth or sixth subject.  There are no tuition fees for Deakin Accelerate.

• Federation University – Advance to University

Advance to University is an opportunity for Year 12 students to study first year university units as part of their VCE.  Successful completion of these units may contribute towards the ATAR, and students get credit towards their university degree.  There are no fees for Advance to University.

• University of Melbourne – Extension Program

The Extension Program is an opportunity for high achieving Year 12 students to study a university subject whilst at school which counts towards their ATAR, as well as experience university life.  There are no fees for participation in the Extension Program.

Nutrition and Dietetics Degrees in Victoria in 2026 According to the Dietitian Association of Australia (DAA) - Dietitian or nutritionist | Dietitians Australia, there is a distinction made between dietitians and other occupations in the nutrition and food science field, including that of nutritionist.  The key difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist is that, in addition to or as part of their qualification in human nutrition, a dietitian has undertaken a course of study that included substantial theory and supervised and assessed professional practice in clinical nutrition, medical nutrition therapy and food service management.  So, in Australia, all dietitians are nutritionists however nutritionists without a dietetics qualification cannot take on the expert role of a dietitian.Victorian universities offering undergraduate courses in nutrition, food science and/or dietetics include:

Note: Food Science and Nutrition are often offered as majors/minors in courses in biomedicine, exercise science, health, and science degrees, etc.  For example, human nutrition is offered as a major in the Bachelor of Biomedicine at University of Melbourne.
