At school, we are continuing to teach our students positive ways to manage conflict and solve problems respectfully. One of the tools we use is the High Five strategy, which gives children simple, step-by-step options to try when dealing with tricky situations with their peers.

The five steps are:

Talk Friendly – Encourage your child to use kind, calm words to let the other person know how they feel.
Talk Firmly – If the behaviour continues, students are encouraged to use a stronger voice to clearly say that the behaviour is not okay.
Ignore – Sometimes the best option is to walk away and not give attention to unkind behaviour.
Walk Away – If ignoring doesn’t work, students are reminded that they can physically move away from the situation.
Report – If the problem still isn’t solved, children should report it to a teacher or adult for support.

By practising the High Five, students are learning practical ways to show respect, take responsibility, and keep themselves and others safe. You might like to talk with your child about how they can also use the High Five at home or in the community.

Dot Day

Each term, students look forward to spending their hard-earned dots on a fun reward activity. It’s a great way to celebrate their positive choices and hard work throughout the term. Everyone had a wonderful time enjoying the experience together!

Student Wellbeing and Respectful Relationships

As part of our Term 4 Respectful Relationships, we continue to look at our core GREAT expectation of Respect. Together, we continue to unpack what respect truly means — from self-respect to online respect, and the power of “micro-respects” in building strong and positive relationships.

Students will be challenged to complete three small acts of respect and to consider what it means to be respectful: showing respect to teachers, coaches, peers, parents, siblings and learning how to repair relationships when mistakes are made.

Above all, we will reflect on how respect can become more than just an action — it becomes part of who we are, every day as students of Goondiwindi State School and into the future.

Student Council

Student Council Fundraising

This year our Student Council raised an incredible $1600. We are very grateful for the wonderful support our families continue to give.

The students decided to donate the funds to Kaloma Aged Care, supporting their ongoing work in the Dementia Ward. This choice reflects the strong connection we share with Kaloma, as our students regularly visit the residents and enjoy time together.

It is so important for young people and older people to connect. When our students visit Kaloma, they bring joy, energy, and companionship, while in return they learn wisdom, history, and the value of care and respect. These connections build community, strengthen empathy, and remind us that every generation has something special to share.

Student Council – The Smith Family Sponsorship

Alongside supporting Kaloma Aged Care, our Student Council also proudly supports The Smith Family. Through this program we sponsor a student, Aisha, who is currently in Year 7. We recently received a letter from Aisha, thanking the Student Council for their support. She shared that she loves music, enjoys going to the beach, and dreams of travelling the world in the future.

It is wonderful for our students to know that their efforts make a real difference, not only in our local community but also in the life of another young person.

House Events

House events are in full swing this term, with plenty of excitement still to come! Students can look forward to House Ball Games, the Obstacle Course, and our final round of “Bin It to Win It.”

Last term, Campbell House took out the Bin It to Win It competition and enjoyed an extra playtime as their prize.

This week we announced the house who donated the most to the Christmas House appeal. The winning house was Lucas House! Congratulations Lucas!

These events are more than just fun — they help build school spirit, encourage teamwork, and give every student a chance to shine. Whether it’s through effort, encouragement, or participation, each student plays an important role in the success of their house.

Chappy News

Recently Chappy organised Operation Christmas Child. Baskets were placed in the classrooms and students were asked to donate items to the baskets. These goods were then packed up and donated to children less fortunate. Chappy Sonia would like to THANK all of the parents, grandparents and staff who donated to the baskets, Dental on Bowen and Goondiwindi Family Dental for a large donation of toothbrushes and a special thanks to Mrs Sally Walters for donating all of her hand sewed items.

SPORT

Last Week Emily Lewis went to Townsville to represent the Darling Downs at the State Championships for Athletics. Emily competed in the shot put and put her best foot forward. She represented GSPS with pride, we are very proud of her achievement.

Playgroup

Miss Casey Simpson and Mrs Donna Norman are our Playgroup Teachers.

Wednesdays 9am to 10:30am. Follow the Red Flags at the Prep Precinct. Bring your GREAT Mates hat, morning tea and a water bottle (and a parent)!!

We are back into it this term and Miss Simpson and Mrs Norman have so much fun stuff planned for our last term! Last week we thought we would stay on the Spring bandwagon and explored more things in the garden. Lots of insects and flowers again and of course the Very Hungry Caterpillar.

This week we are blasting off into SPACE. But be ready for some friendly Witches next week and some spooky things, ready for Halloween. If you have a costume, please feel free to wear it next week.
