Friday Fun: Getting Creative in 1/2!

Fridays are a time when our 1/2 classroom transforms into a vibrant hub of imagination, storytelling, and hands-on making. This term, our Creative Arts sessions have been packed with excitement as we explored different ways to express ourselves.

Here is a look at what we’ve been up to:

🎨 Walcha Show Masterpieces

The Walcha Show has come and gone, and we couldn’t be prouder of our class entries! Our featured artwork—flowers in a vase—looked absolutely wonderful on display. The students worked hard to make their pieces pop with vibrant colours and interesting textures. It was fantastic to see such a variety of creative techniques used to bring these still-life masterpieces to life.

🎭 Bringing Stories to Life

In Drama this term, the students have been practicing their acting skills by stepping into the shoes of characters from important Holy Week and Easter stories. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they use their voices and movement to bring these significant narratives to life for their peers. We have especially focused on the emotions, feelings, and reactions of the characters in different scenes.

🎶 Musical Thursdays: Mini Minstrels

Our creativity hasn't been limited to Fridays! On Thursdays, we have been enjoying Mini Minstrels with Natasha. We have been learning some wonderful songs and beats in music this term. Through lots of fun games, the students have been learning heaps about rhythm and melody while having a blast together.

✂️ Easter Crafts and Art

To wrap up a fantastic term, we turned our attention to Easter crafts. We have used watercolours and oil pastels to create some beautifully designed eggs and easter cards. We have made baskets to collect some eggs in and created some very thoughtful easter designs. They look colourful, vibrant and very special.

Fractions Never Tasted So Good!

Gallery Image

Our Year 5/6 class has been busy exploring fractions in Maths, and on Monday we took our learning to a delicious new level by making pizzas!

As part of our fraction work, students were challenged to decide how to divide their pizzas into equal parts. We saw a fantastic range of fraction knowledge on display, with students creating pizzas divided into one whole, halves, quarters (and then half again), eighths, and one impressive effort even reached sixteenths! Some students also explored thirds — described as looking a little like a capital Y or peace sign — and then extended that understanding to sixths by halving those sections again.

This hands-on activity gave students a practical and memorable way to see how fractions work in real life, while also treating their taste buds at the same time. It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm, teamwork and mathematical thinking happening in the classroom and canteen.

Message from the students: Thank you to Mrs Flanagan for shouting the pizzas, and to Mrs Harrison for capturing the fun with photos!

Year 5/6 students had a bit of fun today convincing Mrs Flanagan that a/ Shaun’s computer screen had cracked and 2/ there was a ‘mouse’ in the classroom!!
