Wellbeing

Eliza Solly - Mental Health & Wellbeing Leader

This year, alongside our wellbeing curriculum, our school wide wellbeing focus is gratitude. Gratitude is the ability to pay attention to what we have rather than worrying about the things we don't have. Research shows that regularly practising gratitude rewires our brains to notice the positives in everyday life. This simple practice helps us to experience greater levels of positive emotions and builds our ability to cope positively with challenges.

Each term, we focus on a different theme to help students develop and practise gratitude:

  • Term 1: Be Grateful (gratitude reflections)
  • Term 2: Be Proud (acknowledging our achievements)
  • Term 3: Be Kind (acts and acknowledgements of kindness)
  • Term 4: Be Thankful (saying thank you)

As part of our wellbeing planning, each teaching team designed learning experiences around our Term 3 theme of Be Kind in ways that best support their students. Here are just a few examples of the wonderful work happening across the school:

Year 1 students are using their chair pockets to create Kindness Bucket Fillers, where they write positive messages to classmates and place them in each other's chair pockets.

Year 2 students have created whole class and individual goals to Bee Kind with a creative bee theme guiding their work.

Year 5/6 students are setting personal kindness goals and writing kindness messages to their peers.

Some of the kindness goals students have set include:

  • Say kind words to others
  • Do something to make someone happy
  • Help someone in class if they don’t know what to do
  • Clean up a mess that is not yours
  • Say please when asking for something
  • Ask someone if they want to play
  • Comfort someone if they are feeling sad
  • Include others
  • Congratulate someone at soccer training

We encourage families to continue this focus on kindness at home by encouraging children to perform acts of kindness for others and to notice and acknowledge when someone shows kindness to them. We look forward to seeing our students continue to spread kindness and strengthen our positive school community throughout the term.
