Going the distance at Zone

Our Years 3–6 students proudly represented our school at the Zone Athletics Carnival, with 46 students competing against six other schools. It was a fantastic day of competition, teamwork, and school spirit.

Every student gave their all in each event, competing with determination, enthusiasm, and great joy. Throughout the day, our team displayed outstanding sportsmanship, cheering each other on, celebrating personal bests, and even applauding the achievements of students from other schools. They were wonderful ambassadors for our school and should be incredibly proud of the way they represented us on the track and field.

We were thrilled to celebrate a number of outstanding individual and team achievements. Many of our students placed in their events, with Elka W and Arlo D both earning the title of Age Champion after performing well throughout the day. Our Senior Boys Relay Team also delivered an incredible performance, storming down the track to finish with a convincing first place win.

A special thank you goes to Mrs Giddings, who was on the BBQ all day and helped run the ever-popular canteen fueling students and their families!

Congratulations to every student who competed. Thank you to all the parents that came and supported our students and cheered them on. We also wish the very best of luck to the students who have qualified to compete at the State Championships in Week 4. We know you will continue to represent our school with pride and give your very best.

Canteen Champions Conquer Shoalhaven Netball Courts

On Wednesday 5 August, Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 packed their netballs (and their appetites) and headed to the Shoalhaven Netball courts for a day of fun and competitive games.

The courts were buzzing as players showed off their skills, sharp passes, clever intercepts, and the occasional spectacular dive that may or may not have been intentional. Teams mixed fun with proper competition, cheering each other on and keeping the energy high from the first whistle to the last.

But let’s be honest: while the netball was excellent, the real highlight of the day was the canteen. Players and spectators alike made regular visits for snacks, drinks and whatever else was on offer. Some students claimed their best “performance” of the day happened in the canteen queue rather than on the court. Strategy, teamwork and lightning fast decision-making were all on display.

By the end of the day everyone agreed it had been a great mix of sport, laughs and excellent canteen service. The skills were sharp, the games were competitive, and the snacks were legendary.

Well played, everyone. Especially the canteen.

Close finish in Primary Chess Comp

On Thursday 6 August, Nowra Christian School (NCS) once again hosted the Shoalhaven Primary Schools Chess Competition. Organised by the NSW Junior Chess League, the event was expertly officiated by Mr Bevan Clouston.

Visiting players from Vincentia, Huskisson, and Gerringong primary schools joined our students for an intense day of strategy and skill. Competing in teams of four, students played multiple rounds to accumulate points for their schools.

In total, 13 teams participated in the tournament. NCS fielded four of those teams, showcasing fantastic representation from students across Years 3 to 6.

The tournament featured exceptionally close, hard-fought, and lengthy games. After eight grueling rounds, the competition ended in a thrilling three-way tie. The top teams from Huskisson, Gerringong, and Nowra Christian School all shared first place, finishing with an impressive 27 points apiece.

Congratulations to all of our players for their outstanding sportsmanship and brilliant strategic play!

Secondary Chess Teams Competition

During Terms 1 and 2, NCS was represented in the NSW Junior Chess League Country Secondary Schools Chess Teams Competition by our team: Yongjae K, Mylan B, Riley Mc, and Levi H, supported by our reserve player, Will A. 

We lost Round 1 to Ulladulla High School, which meant that we were then competing in the second place-getters competition. We had subsequent wins against Eden Marine High School and Sapphire Coast Anglican. 

Most of our rounds have been played online; however, in our last round, we hosted Calderwood Christian School who even brought some extra players for the fun of getting together for chess. We rounded up some extra players of our own and enjoyed some intense battles together and some yummy morning tea. 

Unfortunately, this round saw us bow out of the competition; however, we enjoyed staying in as long as we did. We will continue to sharpen our games ready for next year.

Strong Results at CSSA Zone Athletics

NCS was proudly represented on Monday 3 August, with 46 Secondary students competing at the CSSA South Coast Zone Secondary Athletics Carnival at Beaton Park, Wollongong.

The day was filled with enthusiasm, teamwork and impressive athletic talent, with students featuring in most events and securing 3rd place overall, including 22 qualifiers for the CSSA State Athletics Carnival later in Term 3.

We extend our gratitude to the many supportive parents and carers who attended, and offer a special thank you to Mrs McLaren for her generous assistance with officiating and photography.

Congratulations to Amelia P for breaking the 14 Girls Shot Put record with a throw of 9.11m, and to our Age Champions - Savannah M (12 Girls) and Emily McL (18 Girls) - for their outstanding performances; well done to all students involved.

Year 10's crackin' the trig code

This term, Year 10 has been studying trigonometry and have been tasked with making their own Trig-O-Meter and applying it to a real-life context.

What is a Trig-O-Meter, you ask? Well, it is a device to measure the angle of an object. 

In this case, Year 10 went around the school and measured objects of their choosing. E.g., a tree, the flag pole, a building, and/or the soccer goal post. Then the students had to go back into the classroom and put their measurements to the test. This has helped students realise that maths is used in the real world.

Year 10 Students Build Clinometers for Trigonometry Assessment

Year 10 students are making our own clinometers and using them to measure objects around the school playground as part of a trigonometry assessment.

Working in groups, we constructed simple angle measuring tools, then applied trigonometric ratios to calculate heights and distances of structures such as flagpoles and football posts. The task helps move mathematics from the classroom into practical outdoor work.

Students responded positively to the hands-on approach. 

“Building the clinometer and then using it outside made the maths feel real,” - Ashton J. 

Teachers agreed that the activity strengthens understanding, accuracy and problem solving skills while keeping students engaged. We are currently completing measurements and final calculations for assessment.

Fabulous Day at the Navy doing NextStep

On Thursday 6 August, thirteen highly motivated students had a fascinating and challenging day at HMAS Albatross for the Navy NextStep Program. 

The morning sessions were on interview skills and different careers in Defence. Lunch was delicious at the Junior Sailors Mess and the afternoon session in the gym was fun and exhausting.

Police Immersion Careers Day

Three students from Years 9 & 10 enjoyed a highly informative day at the Police Station hearing about the different career opportunities in the Police Force. Meeting Bandit the Police Dog was a highlight. It was also really interesting learning about the vests and weapons and seeing the police cars.

Hoops and High Spirits at Illawarra!

On Thursday 30 July, our Secondary basketball crew bounced over to Illawarra Sports Stadium for a full day of fast breaks, jump shots and friendly rivalry. The gym echoed with sneakers squeaking and cheers flying as teams battled it out from morning till afternoon in a non-stop basketball extravaganza.

After the final buzzer sounded on a long day of games, the real fun kicked in high-fives, laughter and pure team energy filled the stadium as everyone celebrated the wins, the near-misses and the awesome memories made together.

Shining Bright at the Primary State Netball Comp!

Our Primary Senior Netball team delivered an outstanding performance at the State Netball Competition, showing incredible grit and sportsmanship across six tough games! Following four strong victories, the team showed incredible fight in a nail-biting final match, rallying after halftime to pull within just one point of the day's runners-up.

A huge thank you to all the parents who gave up their time, drove the girls, and cheered them on from the sidelines—we are so proud of how brilliantly they represented our school values on and off the court!
