Sheep
This week, our AWI trainers, Kevan Gellatly and Amanda Davis, along with Mr Adams, led shearing training sessions and demonstrations.
Their combined experience and knowledge provided students with valuable insights into wool handling, preparation, and shearing techniques, while emphasising the importance of maintaining wool quality through to market preparation.

A sincere thank you to Kevin Gellatly, Amanda Davis, and Mr Adams for sharing their expertise, supporting our students, and helping them build their practical skills.

Dairy
Weaning of calves at the dairy is continuing, and they are being vaccinated this week as part of the program.
Silage making is well underway, with freshly cut silage being transported from the paddocks to the storage area near the dairy for future use. Students are using trucks and tractors to transport and stack the silage, gaining experience in machinery operation and feed management.
Pigs
Throughout the eight days of the Perth Royal Show, students delivered three public demonstrations each day on pig washing and handling, engaging visitors and encouraging children to participate. Their efforts were even featured in two Channel 9 weather and news reports.

Students also demonstrated their pigs’ temperament, conformation, and handling skills before presenting their research project on reducing stress to improve pig growth and productivity.
Following the judging, the pigs’ carcasses were assessed and included in the overall results.
Congratulations to Ms Watson and her three students.
Beef
Students were involved in pregnancy testing this week, observing three mobs of cattle being pre-tested. Results showed that89% of the herd is in calf, indicating the reproductive performance achieved through the breeding program. This helped students understand herd fertility management while contributing to the assessment of the College’s beef operation.
These results will inform future decisions on calving, feeding, and overall herd management, with cows managed according to pregnancy status and expected calving dates.
It was also great to see our beef cattle back at this year's Perth Royal Show. Thanks to Ms Davies and the two students for showing in the ring.

Horticulture
The Horticulture section has continued supplying fresh produce to the College kitchen, with a large strawberry harvest delivered this week, along with fresh cabbage.
With the new growing season approaching, Horticulture students are now turning their attention to ground preparation. Over the coming weeks, they will prepare planting areas, improve soil conditions, and ready the gardens for the next range of seasonal crops.
