Two aspirational events completed brilliantly our STEM program for 2024, Meet an Astronaut and the Swinburne Innovation Challenge project.
AHS Senior School students had the opportunity to meet former NASA astronaut Jose Fernandez and engage with him through a Q&A session about his extraordinary experiences in space and his career journey. Mr. Fernandez visited Melbourne as a keynote speaker at the Australian Cyber Conference in November, where he delivered an inspiring talk on resilience and achievement. His presentation featured breathtaking footage from his time aboard the International Space Station and captivating stories of perseverance and success. This unforgettable encounter left a lasting impression on our students and will surely inspire them for years to come!
A group of Year 10 and Year 11 students took part in the Swinburne Innovation Challenge competition, an exciting program focused on addressing one of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) through innovative solutions. During a full-day workshop at Swinburne University of Technology, students teamed up to learn the principles of Innovation Ideation. Each team then developed a prototype and produced a short promotional video to showcase their ideas. The competition results will be announced in March 2025.
For 2025, you can already pencil in some of the key STEM dates below. There will be opportunities to join external programs such as the Science Experience program, for Year 9 and 10 students, organised by the Australian Science Teachers Association and the NSYF Year 12 program from the National Science Youth Forum. So keep an eye on these program's enrolment and delivery dates and more importantly, note that students' enrolment to these external programs may be funded by our local Rotary Club partner.
As the year draws to a close, we would like to celebrate the many STEM activities our students have engaged in. Through these events and competitions, they’ve explored new concepts, grown their skills, and challenged themselves in exciting ways. Well done every one and we look forward to seeing all of you engaging in STEM with the same energy and passion in 2025!
We wish everyone a fantastic festive season filled with relaxation and joy. Why not unleash your creativity and engineering talents to craft a STEM-inspired Christmas tree this year!
