Literacy

Grade 3 students have made a strong start to their literacy learning this term. In Core Literacy Skills, students are focusing on reading a range of texts while developing their fluency and expression. They continue to participate in phonics lessons to strengthen their understanding of letter–sound relationships.

In Reading, students are enjoying their class novel Uncle Xbox. Through this text, students are developing their comprehension skills by exploring characters, events and key ideas within the story. They are learning to respond to questions using evidence from the text, share their thinking in discussions and continue building their vocabulary.

In Writing, students are learning how to create persuasive Single Paragraph Outlines. They are developing their ability to organise their ideas, plan their arguments and include strong reasons and supporting details to persuade their audience. Students are also continuing to strengthen their sentence structure, grammar and paragraphing skills to create clear and effective written responses.

In Grade 4, students are consolidating and expanding their literacy skills and knowledge.

During Core Literacy Skills, students are reading both fiction and non-fiction texts with increasing accuracy, while developing their fluency and expression. They are also strengthening their understanding of prefixes, suffixes, and word meanings. In addition, students participate in daily lessons focused on sentence structure and syntax.

In Reading, students have started exploring the class novel Storm Boy by Colin Thiele. Through the story of a young boy named Storm Boy and his special connection with the natural world, students are developing their understanding of characters, relationships and important themes within the text. As they read, students are learning to respond to questions by using evidence from the story to explain their thinking. They are also continuing to strengthen their sentence structure and syntax skills to write clear and detailed responses. 

In Writing, students are developing their skills in writing information reports. They are learning how to use given information to take notes, organise key ideas and transform their notes into informative paragraphs. Students will also continue to build their narrative writing skills by creating stories with a clear structure, developed characters and details.
