Old Boy Spotlight

In each newsletter we will be recognising some of our St Pius X College Old Boys. However, there are many more SPX Old Boy stories on our website.

Dr John Watkins, Class of 1972

Congratulations to Old Boy Class of 1972, and former NSW Deputy Premier Dr John Watkins who was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Education conferred by the University of Notre Dame, Sydney. Dr Watkins and his brothers Alan (Class of 1965), Michael (1970) and Peter (1982) all attended St Pius X while his sisters Julie, Catherine and Barbara attended Mercy Our Lady of Dolours, Chatswood at the time when Year 11 and 12 were co-educational.

Their parents Pierre and Julie (snr) served our community on the SPX P&F and in the College Office through the 1960s and Michael was a driving force in reconstituting the Old Boys Association in the 1990s as his sons attended the College.

Dr John Watkins who played 1st XV and was an excellent 400m runner, taught co-ed Mathematics at Mercy College before a brief stint at Brigidine College St Ives and then his acclaimed foray into State politics followed by another career in healthcare advocacy.

Ben Johns, Dux, Class of 2015.

During September Ben was awarded the Justice Peter Hely Scholarship which will enable Ben to move to the UK, where he will study for the Master of Law at the University of Cambridge.
