Year 1 & 2 Update
Year 1 update!
The Year Ones have been very busy in the classrooms, working on their spelling, blending and mathematical knowledge. The students have been reading some Indigenous Dreamtime stories and unpacking the lessons we learnt from them.
During the learning, the students had the opportunity to participate in Sam Richards' art incursion, where the students learnt about traditions, special objects and artwork from the indigenous culture. The students participated in doing a dance representing the different animals and completed an artwork describing what they did on the weekend.
For the students' maths work, they have been learning how to be flexible with numbers, sharing them into equal groups and building their tens and ones. The students got to play with sand whilst exploring the concept of capacity, pouring from one container to another.
In Core Literacy, the students have begun expanding their sounds to include trigraphs, three letters making one sound, and practising writing sentences independently from memory. The students are continuing to build their blending skills, stretching their sounds and reading unfamiliar words.
We are so proud of the work they have been doing and look forward to the rest of the year.
The Year One Team
Grade 2 Update – Term 3
It has been another busy term in Grade 2, with students engaging in lots of new learning and continuing to build their confidence and independence across the curriculum.
In Mathematics, we have been exploring fractions, with a focus on repeated halving to create halves, quarters and eighths. Students have also been strengthening their understanding of place value by renaming numbers using hundreds, tens and ones. We have revisited shapes, exploring to describe them based on their different features and identifying how they are similar or different.
In English, students have been developing their speaking and listening skills by giving oral explanations of processes, including explaining how to draw different animals. We have also enjoyed reading a range of texts that explore Indigenous and world cultures, including Out, Empanadas for Everyone, The Cunning Crow and Big Rain Coming. These texts have encouraged some wonderful discussions and helped students learn about different experiences, cultures and perspectives.
In Core Literacy, we have been learning about the schwa sound, where a vowel can make an unstressed ‘uh’ sound, such as in the word trumpet. Students continue to work in targeted Core Literacy groups, allowing them to develop their literacy skills through learning that addresses their individual needs.
In Social and Emotional Learning, we have been exploring how our actions can have positive or negative consequences. Students have been learning strategies for keeping small problems small, supporting them to solve minor issues independently in the yard. We have also been building our emotional literacy, with a focus on recognising and identifying emotions in ourselves and others.
We are looking forward to continuing all of this wonderful learning throughout the remainder of Term 3!
