Arrival of French Exchange students
At the start of term, we were excited to welcome 10 French exchange students and teacher Ms Emilie Gillet, joining us from Viala Lacoste in Salon-de-Provence, France.
During their stay, the students will be attending Senior School classes with their host students, in addition to joining our French Club and attending various events and carnivals in our Junior School. Girton thanks all the families who are generously hosting the students during their time in Bendigo.
Girton Community Action Group: Guest Speakers Daniel and Darryl Giles
During Co-Connect time on Wednesday 30 April, students had the incredible opportunity to hear guest speakers Daniel Giles and his father Darryl talk about Daniel's autism journey.
Originally from Bendigo, they are the founders of Speaking Insights and have travelled all over the world sharing Daniel's story. They also hold monthly seminars at the Bendigo Club and attend and volunteer at support groups for adults and teens with autism.
Daniel is a recipient of the Order of Australia Medal and is an inspiration for many students with autism and their families. During his presentation, he highlighted that those with autism are not less capable but rather they see the world in a different way to those who are neurotypical. Daniel is currently a successful graphic designer for the Catholic Education Office and a passionate volunteer for Bendigo Foodshare. His journey highlights that every student can achieve their dream, regardless of whether they are neurotypical or neurodiverse.
It was an honour to have Daniel and Darryl come and speak to the students at Girton, and I know that I personally learnt a lot about autism and the way people with autism see and express themselves in the world.
If you want to hear more about Daniel and Darryl, and the support they provide, see the Speaking Insights and Different Journeys websites.
