SPOTLIGHT ON PREP SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING
As the Wellbeing Leader, I am excited to share a brief look at the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) journey our Prep students embark on throughout their very first year of school.
Our Prep SEL program focuses on helping our youngest learners build a strong foundation for both academic success and personal growth.
Throughout the year, our Preps explore five key areas:
Self-Awareness: Learning to recognise and name basic emotions, identifying personal strengths, and understanding what makes them unique.
Self-Management: Developing simple strategies to regulate big feelings, practice patience, build focus, and try again when things get challenging.
Social Awareness: Understanding empathy, recognizing how others might be feeling, and learning about fairness, kindness, and respect in the classroom.
Relationship Skills: Building positive friendships, practicing sharing and taking turns, working collaboratively during play, and using polite words to express needs.
Responsible Decision-Making: Learning to make safe choices, follow classroom norms, and solve small everyday playground problems constructively.
Through stories, role-play, guided discussions, and interactive games, our Preps are learning that taking care of our minds and hearts is just as important as learning to read and write. We encourage you to ask your children about what emotions or friendship tools they practiced at school each week!
Recently, Preps have been exploring what makes each of us unique, celebrating our individual strengths to build a warm sense of belonging while learning that treating one another's differences with kindness and respect is the foundation of strong friendships. Look at our amazing work!
