News from the Chicken Coop
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
We are truly grateful to all of our wonderful school families and staff who volunteered to do Chicken Duty this year. Without your help we would not be able to keep live animals at school and provide our students with a great learning experience. The junior and middle school students love visiting and helping out at Chicken Club while the senior classes take turns being responsible for their day to day care.
Goodbye Chickens
We are happy to let you know that our remaining 3 chickens have found a new home where they will be well cared for. We decided to rehome them in the best interest of their health as the construction next to the chicken yard is very noisy and disruptive for them which has caused some stress.
We had these chickens at school for just over 2 1/2 years. They are very friendly and many students would often visit them for a chat.
We will miss you Princess Lay-a, Hazel, Lily, Browny and Cinnamon
Gardening with Jan!
Jan began volunteering at St John’s in term 2 and the Gardening Club was up and running!
Jan has done amazing things with our vegetable garden along with her dedicated group of student gardeners. Read on to find out more…
This year we started a Gardening Club with the help of Jan.
She has shown us what a few weeks can do in the garden and how quickly plants can grow.
We planted things like beetroot, carrots, strawberries, tomatoes, celery and my favourites, peas, along with many other vegetables.
We now have a beautiful herb garden with lots of different plants in it and it smells great!
We also learnt how to grow bird seed, bok choy and chook grass from seed. We looked after it until it was long enough to cut and then we gave it to the chickens as a special treat. They loved it!
We also grew sunflowers from seed and they are amazing. Come and have a look!
Jan has taught us so much about gardening and we have all enjoyed coming to Gardening Club.
So we just wanted to say ‘Thanks Jan!’
