From the Head of College

Mr Paul Blinkhoff - Head of College (Acting)

Welcome Back to Term 4

I hope our students, staff and families enjoyed well-earned break and had the opportunity to spend time with those that matter most.

As we begin Term 4, there is a genuine sense of anticipation around the College. While it is our shortest term, it is often one of our most significant. It is a term of milestones, celebrations, challenges and achievements. Most importantly, it is an opportunity for every young man to finish the year strongly.

For our Year 12 students, the weeks ahead mark the final chapter of their Marist journey. For others, it's a chance to build on the progress they have made throughout the year and make the most of every opportunity that comes their way. Regardless of year level, I encourage all students to approach the term with purpose, gratitude and a commitment to being their very best.

As we return to routine, I also ask all students to take pride in their appearance. The way we wear our uniform and present ourselves reflects not only personal standards, but also our respect for the College and for one another. Our expectations regarding uniform, grooming and hair standards remain unchanged and I thank families for their support in upholding these expectations.

I look forward to all that lies ahead this term and to celebrating the many achievements, big and small, that continue to make Marist such a special place.

Queensland Training Awards State Finalist

We are delighted to acknowledge Year 11 student Mason Irving, who was recently named a finalist in the 2026 Queensland Training Awards.

After winning the Metropolitan Region School-based Apprentice or Trainee of the Year award, Mason progressed to the Queensland Training Awards State Finals, held on Saturday 19 September at The Star Casino. Mason is undertaking a school-based apprenticeship in construction with CJC Construction, under the guidance and support of proud Old Boy Charles Curcuruto. His selection as a state finalist reflects the maturity, professionalism and commitment he brings to both his apprenticeship and his studies. While he did not secure the state title, reaching this stage is an outstanding achievement and one that speaks volumes about his dedication and work ethic.

Being recognised among Queensland's best school-based apprentices and trainees is a remarkable accomplishment and reflects both Mason's hard work and the opportunities provided through our Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs. We also acknowledge Charles and the team at CJC Construction for the valuable mentorship, encouragement and real-world learning opportunities they have provided throughout Mason's apprenticeship journey.

Mason's achievement is something our community can be genuinely proud of. We congratulate him on this significant achievement and look forward to following his continued success in the future.

Congratulations to Archer Mellifont on a remarkable achievement in the pool.

Representing the Queensland Swimming Team at the South Australian Short Course Championships, Archer delivered a truly outstanding performance, setting a new South Australian all-comers record of 25.38 seconds in the men's 50m backstroke.

This record-breaking swim is a testament to Archer's dedication, talent and commitment to excellence. To compete at this level and achieve such a result is an exceptional accomplishment and reflects the hard work he continues to put into his chosen sport.

Adding to an already impressive year, Archer also competed at the New Zealand Short Course Championships during the school holidays, where he recorded the eighth-fastest 100m backstroke short course time ever by a 17-year-old, further highlighting his standing among the country's most promising young swimmers.

Archer's success is a wonderful example of what can be achieved through talent, commitment and consistent hard work. Congratulations, Archer.

State Honours Ensemble Program

Congratulations to the Marist students who were selected to participate in the Australian Honours Ensemble Program (AHEP) and the State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP), held from 1-5 October.

Selection in these prestigious programs is a significant achievement and reflects the talent, dedication and commitment of our students. Beyond developing their musical skills, the experience provides invaluable opportunities to collaborate with like-minded young musicians and learn from outstanding conductors and performers.

We congratulate all students involved and thank them for representing Marist College Ashgrove with pride. Their participation is a wonderful example of the rich opportunities available through our Music Program and the pursuit of excellence that continues to flourish across the College.

Queensland Mental Health Week (3-11 October)

This week we recognise Queensland Mental Health Week, an important reminder that looking after our mental wellbeing is just as important as taking care of our physical health.

At Marist, one of our greatest strengths is the sense of mateship that exists within our community. We encourage our young men to look out for one another, to check in on their mates and to be willing to have a conversation when someone may be doing it tough. Sometimes, a simple "Are you okay?" can make all the difference.

Our young men need to know that asking for help is not a sign of weakness. Having the courage to speak up, seek support or check in with a trusted adult is a sign of real strength.

Students are also reminded that our dedicated and confidential College Counsellors are always available to listen, support and guide them. Whether a concern feels big or small, there is always someone ready to help.

This Queensland Mental Health Week, let us continue to foster a community where every young man feels connected, supported and valued. Looking after ourselves is important, but looking after our mates is just as vital. After all, that is what being part of the Marist family is all about.

AIC Track and Field Championships

On Thursday 8 and Friday 9 October, our Athletics program reaches its pinnacle as Marist College Ashgrove competes in the AIC Track & Field Championships.

This two-day event represents the culmination of months of dedication, early mornings, training sessions and unwavering commitment from our athletes and coaches. Every student who takes to the track or field has earned the opportunity to represent the College and should be proud of their efforts in reaching this level.

This year, our Secondary team will be aiming to secure an extraordinary 12th successive AIC Championship, while our Primary team will be striving to claim a remarkable 6th consecutive AIC Championship. These achievements reflect the strength of our Athletics program and the commitment of generations of Marist students, staff and families.

The AIC Championships are about more than results. They are an opportunity to demonstrate the values that define our community: courage, perseverance, teamwork and pride in representing something greater than ourselves. We encourage all athletes to compete with determination, support their teammates and embrace the experience.

We acknowledge the outstanding leadership of our Co-Head Coaches, Mr Rob Martin and Mr Thomas Prole, whose dedication, expertise and passion have been instrumental in preparing our athletes throughout the season.

We also thank our coaches, staff and families for the support they have provided and wish all members of the Marist Athletics team every success across the two championship days.

Go Marist! We look forward to seeing our students give their very best and represent the College with pride, spirit and sportsmanship.

2026 Marist Awards Night

On 12 October, we look forward to gathering as a College community for the 2026 Marist Awards Night, one of the most significant events on our annual calendar.

Awards Night provides an opportunity to celebrate the commitment, effort and achievements of our students across academic, co-curricular and community life. It is a chance to recognise not only outstanding results, but also the perseverance, growth and dedication that underpin success.

At Marist, we believe in celebrating young men who strive to be their best, support others and embrace the many opportunities available to them. The evening will showcase the breadth of talent within our community and acknowledge those students who have made exceptional contributions throughout the year.

We look forward to welcoming students, families and staff as we come together to honour the achievements of our young men and celebrate another year of learning, growth and excellence at Marist College Ashgrove.

Year 12 Masterclasses Commence

On 13 October, our Year 12 Masterclasses commence, providing students with valuable opportunities to refine their knowledge, strengthen their exam preparation and maximise their performance in the final weeks of their schooling.

These sessions are designed to support students as they prepare for their external assessments, offering targeted guidance from our experienced teaching staff and helping students build confidence in key subject areas. Year 12s undertaking General subjects have two mandatory Masterclasses per General subject (ie. Subjects with an External exam).

As our Year 12 students approach the culmination of their Marist journey, I encourage them to embrace every opportunity available, remain focused on their goals and make the most of the support on offer. Success in these final weeks will be built on consistent effort, careful preparation and a commitment to finishing strongly.

We wish all Year 12 students every success as they begin this important phase of their preparation and look forward to celebrating their achievements in the weeks ahead.

As always, thank you for your continued support of the College and for the partnership that exists between our families, staff and students. It is this shared commitment to our young men that makes Marist such a special community. Let us make the most of every opportunity, support each other along the way and finish the year strongly.

Take care, Paul

May our loving God with Mary our good mother and St Marcellin Champagnat walk with all members of the Marist College Ashgrove family.
