Strengthening Number Sense at Home
The Department of Education’s Victorian Mathematics Ambassadors, in partnership with Victorian government, and Catholic schools, have created a suite of mathematics videos and resources to support families. The videos offer clear explanations and practical demonstrations designed to boost students’ confidence, fluency and understanding.
The resources include:
Five practical, easy-to-use videos designed for students in Foundation - Year 2
Alignment with evidence-informed teaching practices that reinforce classroom learning
The unpacking of the four key number sense concepts students need to master in the early years of schooling.
The videos are:
Strengthening number sense at home
Strengthening number sense at home - Introduction
Strengthening number sense at home - One-to-one correspondence with Aintree Primary School
Strengthening number sense at home: Subitising with Tootgarook Primary School
Strengthening number sense at home: Partitioning (part-part-whole) with Warringa Park School
Strengthening number sense at home - Teen Numbers with St Thomas the Apostle Catholic Primary School
The videos show what number sense looks like in the classroom. They also give parents and carers simple tips to help their child build number sense at home. The first video explains what the series is about. The next four videos each focus on an important early maths skill. Your child will learn these skills in their first years of school, from Foundation to Grade 2.
After each video, there are tips that parents and carers can use to practice the skills with their child at home.
The videos are available at the Victorian Government’s Mathematics and Numeracy at home website - https://www.vic.gov.au/mathematics-and-numeracy-home
