How to reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses this Winter

There is an increased risk of respiratory illness during the winter months.

In Victoria, there has been 2.5 times the number of COVID-19 cases in April and May this year, compared with the same period in 2024, and hospitalisations have been increasing. Influenza (flu) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases are also increasing.+

Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and others – it is never too late to get vaccinated.

How to reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses:

Encourage your staff and students to:

  • wash or sanitise their hands thoroughly and regularly, particularly before and after touching their face
  • cough or sneeze into their elbow
  • use air purifiers
  • maximise external ventilation
  • stay home if unwell and consult their GP or Nurse-on-Call as needed
  • stay up to date with their flu and COVID-19 vaccinations.
