Reading

This term, we will finish up reading Charlotte’s Web, before moving on to The One and Only Ivan.
The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate follows Ivan, an easygoing silverback gorilla who has spent 27 years living in a glass enclosure at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade.
When business at the shopping center declines, the owner, Mack, purchases a baby elephant named Ruby to boost ticket sales. Ruby's arrival disrupts the routine and forces Ivan to view their captivity through fresh eyes. Unlike Ivan, who barely remembers his life in the jungle, Ruby is terrified and misses her natural habitat.
After an unexpected tragedy leaves Ruby vulnerable to harsh circus training methods, Ivan makes a solemn vow to protect the young elephant and ensure she doesn't spend her life behind glass.
Realising he cannot save her with brute strength, Ivan decides to use his unexpected talent for art. He hatches a creative plan to use his paints to send a message to the outside world, setting off a risky effort to change both of their fates.
